Triple Calanque Trek: Port-Miou, Port-Pin & En-Vau Hiking Tour
Five hours through limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and layers of wartime history on the Mediterranean coast
The Calanques National Park hiking tour takes you through three of the most remarkable coastal inlets in southern France, guided by a specialist who knows every ridge and rock along the route. This moderate five-hour circuit blends geological wonder, World War II heritage, and Provencal tradition into a single unforgettable day.
The route begins at Port-Miou, a long sheltered calanque shaped by more than 75 years of industrial limestone extraction, before moving on to the secluded bay of Port-Pin where pine-covered slopes meet clear shallow water. The journey culminates at En-Vau, a dramatic cathedral of white cliffs rising from a beach that has served as a filming location and artistic inspiration for over a century.
Throughout the hike, your guide contextualizes the landscape with stories drawn from geology, wartime occupation, and Provencal culture. Concrete bunkers from the German Sudwall still stand at the cliff tops, and the former Piolet refuge once served as a military battery commanding the entrance to En-Vau.
The tour closes with a scenic picnic on the beach at En-Vau, where guests share fresh baguettes, goat cheese, olives, and pate de campagne while surrounded by turquoise water and the quiet of a protected national park.

Itinerary
The hike begins at Calanque de Port-Miou, a long sheltered inlet whose distinctive shape was carved by the extraction of millions of tons of limestone between 1896 and the late 20th century. Belgian industrialist Ernest Solvay opened the quarry here to supply his soda-production process, and the extracted Cassis stone was also used in the manufacture of chlorine for industrial purposes. Today the calanque offers calm waters, dense vegetation, and a direct view of the industrial legacy that defined this coastline for generations.
The trail continues to Calanque de Port-Pin, a compact bay fringed by Aleppo pines and known for its exceptionally clear shallow water. The setting is calm and largely sheltered from wind, making it a natural resting point before the more demanding section ahead. A concrete bunker overlooking the bay entrance dates from the German wartime occupation and retains its circular observation aperture, from which soldiers once monitored maritime traffic.
The route descends into Calanque d'En-Vau, the most celebrated and visually striking of the three inlets, where vertical limestone walls rise steeply on both sides of a narrow beach. The site has been used as a location in multiple French films and was painted by Jean-Baptiste Olive, one of whose works is held at the Toulon Museum of Art. A section of the wartime Mediterranean Wall still stands on the beach, a concrete barrier constructed by German forces as part of the broader Sudwall coastal defense system.
After the descent to the beach, guests take a break with a guided picnic that draws on the flavors of the surrounding region. The spread includes fresh baguettes, local goat cheese, tapenade, olives, pate de campagne, and aioli, all sourced from Provencal producers. The meal is served directly on the beach with the cliffs and turquoise water as the backdrop before the return hike begins.
The return leg retraces part of the route along the ridge paths, offering elevated views over the calanques from above that differ significantly from the approach trail. The guide uses this section to revisit key points from the day and answer questions about the geology, ecology, and history of the national park. The hike concludes back at Port-Miou, completing a circuit of approximately five hours of total walking time.
