Private Tour to Abu Simbel from Aswan
A journey through rock-cut temples into the heart of ancient Nubia
This private tour to Abu Simbel from Aswan takes you on a 287-kilometre journey south to one of Egypt's most extraordinary archaeological sites, deep in the Nubian landscape near the Sudanese border. The round trip covers approximately eight hours, including the three-hour drive each way and a minimum of two hours exploring the temples themselves.
The Great Temple of Abu Simbel was carved directly into a sandstone cliff by King Ramesses II around 1264 BC, during the Nineteenth Dynasty. Four colossal seated statues of the king dominate the facade, one of which collapsed in antiquity and whose fragments remain visible on the ground today.
Inside the main hall, colossal standing statues of Ramesses line the corridor leading to the innermost sanctuary, where four deities sit side by side: Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, Ptah, and a deified Ramesses II. The temple was oriented with such precision that on two dates each year, 22 February and 22 October, sunlight penetrates the entire length of the hall to illuminate three of the four statues.
The adjacent Temple of Queen Nefertari, also known as the Temple of Hathor, was dedicated to the goddess Hathor and to Nefertari herself. Together, the two temples form a symbolic union between Ramesses II, Nefertari, Hathor, and the solar gods, making Abu Simbel a site of theological as well as architectural significance.
