5 Days Dahabiya Nile River Cruise from Luxor to Aswan
A slow, elegant journey through four millennia of history along the world's greatest river.
The 5 Days Dahabiya Nile River Cruise from Luxor to Aswan offers an unhurried passage through the heart of Upper Egypt, connecting the most significant pharaonic monuments ever built. Traveling aboard a traditional dahabiya, guests experience the Nile at a pace that allows genuine immersion in the landscape and its layered history. The journey spans five days and four nights, beginning in Luxor and concluding in Aswan.
Upper Egypt holds the densest concentration of ancient monuments on earth, and this itinerary visits the most significant among them. From the colossal columns of Karnak to the rock-cut royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings, every stop reveals a distinct chapter of ancient Egyptian civilization. The route follows the Nile southward, linking sites that were once interconnected by the same river that carries travelers today.
A private, air-conditioned vehicle and a qualified Egyptologist guide accompany the group at every shore excursion. The dahabiya format, a traditional wooden sailing vessel, keeps the group small and the experience personal. This itinerary is rated easy and suits travelers of most fitness levels.
The cruise ends in Aswan, a city where Nubian culture, colonial-era engineering, and ancient temples converge at the edge of Lake Nasser. The Philae temple complex and the Aswan High Dam provide a fitting conclusion to a journey that spans both deep antiquity and the modern era.

Itinerary Overview
The journey begins on Luxor's west bank with a visit to the Valley of the Kings, where rock-cut tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs were excavated over nearly 500 years. The mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, a masterpiece of Eighteenth Dynasty architecture set against limestone cliffs, follows. The day concludes at the Colossi of Memnon, two towering statues of Amenhotep III standing before his ruined mortuary temple.
The morning is devoted to Karnak, a vast complex of temples, pylons, and chapels accumulated by successive pharaohs over more than a thousand years. An Egyptologist guide contextualizes the hypostyle hall, the sacred lake, and the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes. Guests board the dahabiya in the afternoon and begin the southward journey on the Nile.
The dahabiya moors at Edfu for a visit to the Temple of Horus, known in the Hellenistic period as Apollonopolis Magna and among the most intact ancient temples in Egypt. Sailing onward, the route passes the Golden Chain of Mountains between Edfu and Kom Ombo, a quarry site active from the Eighteenth Dynasty that supplied stone for Karnak, Luxor temple, and Medinet Habu.
The unusual double temple of Kom Ombo, constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty between 180 and 47 BC, is dedicated symmetrically to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus. The site includes a collection of mummified crocodiles discovered in the vicinity. The dahabiya continues south toward Aswan after the visit.
The final day in Aswan covers the High Dam, completed in 1970 and one of the world's largest embankment dams; the Unfinished Obelisk, the largest known ancient obelisk, abandoned in its quarry; and the Philae temple complex, relocated to Agilkia Island following the dam's construction. After breakfast, guests disembark and transfer onward from Aswan.
