Fantastic Desert Tour From Fes to Marrakech via Merzouga
From cedar forests and alpine villages to golden dunes and ancient kasbahs
This 4-day tour from Fes to Marrakech via Merzouga traces a sweeping route through Morocco's most varied landscapes, connecting imperial city heritage with the silence and scale of the Sahara Desert. Each stage of the journey introduces a distinct environment, from snow-touched Atlas plateaus to sun-baked canyon floors.
Departing Fes, the route passes through Ifrane, a town of European-styled architecture set among cedar forests where Barbary Macaques roam freely. The descent through the Ziz Valley opens gradually onto the pre-Saharan plains before the sand dunes of Merzouga come into view at the end of the first day.
The second day is devoted entirely to the Merzouga area, with an off-road excursion to ancient kohl mines, a visit to Khamlia village for Gnaoua music, and time at Merzouga Lake. The final two days wind through Rissani, Erfoud, the Todra and Dades Gorges, Ait Ben Haddou, and the High Atlas before arriving in Marrakech.

Take in panoramic views over the Ziz Valley, a ribbon of date palms and irrigated gardens cutting through the arid landscape below Errachidia.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Fes and pass through the alpine town of Ifrane, then continue to the Cedars Forest near Azrou for a walk among century-old trees and a chance to see Barbary Macaques. The afternoon route descends through the Ziz Valley, offering sweeping views over one of the Sahara's most fertile corridors, before arriving at the Merzouga dunes for a camel trek and an overnight stay at a traditional kasbah or desert camp.
A full day in and around Merzouga begins with an off-road 4x4 excursion to ancient antimony mines used for centuries as a source of natural kohl. The circuit continues to Khamlia village for Gnaoua music, a visit to nomadic families for tea and conversation, and time at Merzouga Lake, a seasonal wetland that attracts migratory birds. The evening is spent at a luxury private tent camp among the dunes.
The morning begins with a visit to Rissani's centuries-old market and the fossil showrooms of Erfoud before heading north to walk through the narrow slot of Todra Gorge. The route then follows the Dades Valley, passing the eroded rock columns known locally as the monkey fingers formation, before ending the day in Ouarzazate with an optional visit to Taourirt Kasbah.
The final day travels through the rose-growing region of Kalaa M'Gouna, the palm groves of Skoura, and the iconic earthen ramparts of Ait Ben Haddou before the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
