Tamil Nadu & Kerala Explorer: Temples, Backwaters & Wildlife
Eleven days through ancient Dravidian temples, lush wildlife sanctuaries, and the serene canals of Kerala
This South India tour traces a carefully designed route through Tamil Nadu and Kerala, connecting UNESCO-listed temples, colonial-era cities, a wildlife sanctuary, and the iconic Kerala backwaters into a single cohesive journey. The itinerary is rated very easy, making it accessible to a broad range of travellers. Each destination builds on the last, offering a layered understanding of one of the world's most culturally rich regions.
South India is a distinct civilisation within India, shaped by Dravidian languages, Pallava and Chola dynasties, and a long history of contact with European colonial powers. The architectural tradition alone spans more than a thousand years, from the 8th-century Kailashnath temple in Kanchipuram to the towering gopurams of Madurai's Meenakshi complex. Alongside these monuments, the region preserves living spiritual traditions that remain deeply embedded in daily life.
The journey moves from the Bay of Bengal coast southward through the Kaveri delta, then crosses into Kerala's highland interior before descending to the backwater lagoons and the Arabian Sea port of Kochi. Each leg introduces a different facet of southern India: coastal pilgrimage sites, river-basin temple towns, a spice-rich forest reserve, and a waterway network that has shaped Kerala's economy and culture for centuries.
Accommodation throughout the tour is at hotels selected for comfort and proximity to key sites, with one night aboard a traditional Kerala houseboat providing a direct encounter with backwater life. All transfers are included, and a local representative meets travellers on arrival in Chennai.
Tour Highlights
Visit the UNESCO-listed Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, the ceremonial heart of the Chola Empire and one of the finest examples of classical South Indian architecture.
Spend a night aboard a traditional Kettuvallom houseboat drifting through the Kerala backwaters, observing village life along the canal banks at a natural pace.
Take an afternoon boat ride on Periyar Lake inside the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, where herds of elephants, bison, and spotted deer regularly appear along the shoreline.
Explore Mahabalipuram's shore temples and rock-cut cave panels, a coastal World Heritage Site built by Pallava rulers and facing the sunrise over the Bay of Bengal.
Walk through Kochi's historic Fort Cochin district, visiting Mattancherry Palace and the Pardesi Synagogue within a cityscape shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonialism.
Attend the evening ceremony at the Sri Meenakshi temple in Madurai and a Kathakali dance performance in Kochi, two of Kerala and Tamil Nadu's most distinctive cultural rituals.
Discover Pondicherry's French Quarter, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and the town's blend of Tamil and French colonial heritage along its clean, tree-lined streets.
