Benagil: caves, boat tours and the Algarve

Praia de Benagil sits on the coast of Lagoa municipality, in the Algarve. Benagil is a small hamlet in the parish of Lagoa e Carvoeiro. Benagil grew as a fishing village; today it lives mainly from tourism.

Benagil cave tours

Algar de Benagil is the Portuguese name for Benagil Cave, the attraction at the centre of tourism in the village. Erosion has shaped the cave from above as well as from its sides. Sunlight enters through a gap in the roof and illuminates the interior. The caves are offshore from Benagil Beach, within Lagoa municipality.

The Benagil kayak tour and sea cave adventure in the Algarve lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. It includes a kayak, paddle, life vest and kayak seat, a windbreaker, a wetsuit for winter and spring departures, a video recording of the tour and an experienced local guide.

Benagil boat tours

The Benagil Caves boat tour from Portimão along the Algarve coast lasts 2 hours. Included are an excursion aboard a semirigid boat along the coastline of the Algarve, life jackets for every passenger, the full safety equipment carried aboard, a visit to Benagil Cave and commentary from a local skipper in several languages.

The guided Algarve boat tour with caves and dolphin watching lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. It includes a cruise along the Algarve coast, a professional local guide, safety vests and life jackets, a safety briefing aboard, commentary from a marine biologist and a visit to the Benagil caves.

Benagil in the Algarve

Benagil village and its beach are near Marinha Beach. The sandy part of Praia de Benagil was made wider in 2014. Marinha Beach belongs to Caramujeira, a hamlet within Lagoa municipality in the Algarve. Cliffs of orange limestone line Marinha Beach. Limestone caves and grottoes form part of the seaside landscape along the Algarve coast.

Lagoa is both a city and a municipality in Faro district, within Portugal's Algarve region. Lagoa municipality was established by a royal decree (alvará) of King Joseph I on 16 January 1773. The Algarve occupies the southern part of mainland Portugal, with Faro serving as its administrative centre.

Cave access and visitor limits

Concerns raised from 2023 about safety and excessive tourism led to regulations at Benagil. From August 2024, restrictions have limited how many vessels can be inside the cave simultaneously. A working group was formed to determine visitor capacity and the conditions for access to the caves. A working group coordinated by CCDR Algarve proposed the access conditions, and the navigation rules issued by the maritime authority were put to public consultation in 2024.

Regional food and wine

Fish and seafood feature in the cooking of the Algarve coast. Regional agriculture includes almonds, figs, oranges, carob, olives, avocados and cork oak. Lagoa municipality is the focus of the Portuguese wine region called Lagoa DOC.

Regional climate

Across the Algarve, winters bring mild temperatures and rain, while dry summers range from warm to very hot.
