Carregado, Alenquer and Ota form the axis along which the municipality's urban areas are arranged. The municipality occupies the right bank of the lower Tagus basin, within the northern part of Lisbon district. Its neighbours include Cadaval to the north and Azambuja to the east.

Railway history and the station

Portugal's railway story began with a journey from Lisbon to Carregado in 1856. The country's first train arrived in Carregado on 28 October that year. The inaugural services set out from the temporary station at Cais dos Soldados, with Carregado as their destination. Two locomotives named Portugal and Coimbra, together with sixteen carriages, made up the inaugural train. Carregado station served as the temporary end of the Caminho de Ferro do Leste, which started in Lisbon.

Cottinelli Telmo designed the passenger building that stands at the station today. Opened in 1931, it follows the Art Deco style. Its facades are symmetrical, with an entrance in the centre and two floors. During the celebrations marking 160 years of Portuguese railways, Infraestruturas de Portugal finished renovation and repainting work at the station. Railways were not Carregado's only transport connection: the town also served as a significant mail-coach stop in the 19th century.
