Die Dunkle Wanderung: Levada do Folhadal Nachtpfad
This tour takes place on the island of Madeira, an autonomous Portuguese archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean approximately 520 kilometres west of Morocco. The trail begins at Encumeada Pass, a high mountain saddle sitting at roughly 1,004 metres above sea level in the central highlands of the island, connecting the southern municipality of Serra de Água with the northern municipality of São Vicente. The route follows the Levada do Folhadal through the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers approximately 15,000 hectares of Madeira's interior. The western slopes of Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak at 1,862 metres, and neighbouring Pico de São Jorge form the dramatic eastern backdrop of the trail. The São Vicente Valley, visible from multiple points along the route, runs northward toward the Atlantic coast. This geographic setting makes the hike one of the most scenically diverse short trails on the island, combining high-altitude ridgeline walking, dense ancient forest, and sweeping valley panoramas within a two-hour window.
