The name Jökulsárlón directly translates to glacier lagoon. When the first settlers arrived in Iceland, it is believed that the edge of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of the massive Vatnajökull glacier, was located 20km further north than its current position.
Around the year 1200, the climate started to cool, with the coldest period occurring between 1600 and 1900, often referred to as the “Little Ice Age.”
As a result the glacier advanced until about 1890, reaching a point only about 1km from the coast at Jökulsá river. Large blocks of ice break off the edge of the glacier, which is about 30m high, keeping the lagoon stocked with icebergs.
