Santana is a small village located on the northern coast of Madeira Island, Portugal. Its traditional houses, decorated with straw and built with triangular-shaped roofs, are popularly known as “palheiros”. Farmers used these houses to store their tools and harvests. Tourists can now experience the traditional Santana lifestyle by staying in some of the houses that have been converted into accommodations.
People build the palheiros of Santana using stone and cover them with straw or tiles. A rectangular plan and a gable roof with two inclined waters at an angle of 45 degrees make up their construction. Straw covers the roofs, offering insulation against both cold and heat. The stone walls are thick, offering both insulation and stability. The houses have small windows to protect against the wind and rain.
The interior of the houses is simple, with only one room that serves as a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. The furniture is also simple, with wooden tables, chairs, and beds. People use wood or stone to make the floors, and they whitewash the walls. Some houses have a small attic that people use for storage.
Santana’s traditional houses are an excellent example of the island’s architecture and design. They represent the dedication and effort put into building the terraces in a challenging environment. The houses’ simplicity and durability have allowed them to withstand time and weather, making them an essential part of the island’s cultural heritage.
