There explore “Sobrados” and wander around this charming little town lined with colorful colonial houses.

After a delicious lunch in a local atmosphere, drive northwards to the village of Mosteiros and stroll up the lava flows created by the 1951 eruption, a succession of jagged, dark intrusions on the landscape.

Get picked up at your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras and walk with your guide until reaching the foot of the Volcano. From there, marvel with the regular view of its active volcanic cone, where the last eruption occurred in 2014. The volcano's surroundings are deep black, composed of lava and a lush green vegetation.

Chã das Caldeiras: Hiking Portela - 1995 Peak - 2014 Crater - Portela
Get picked up at your accommodation and be prepared for a spectacular walking adventure that you have certainly never done before. Leave Portela village on a traceable path passing through sporadically planted fruit trees and vines, your path pushing gently upwards. Next, walk across the dusty lapilli that seems to muffle sound and life, then up to the 1995 peak, before making the short ascent to peer down into the colorful, smoking crater created in 2014. Hike to the peak of 1995, on a steep but short path, and proceed to climb the new craters 2014, a little higher. Cross paths where lava has truncated the cobblestone road and take a break for a well-deserved picnic. After that, return down the path, which takes about 45 minutes to reach your hotel.
