Nafplio is located on a small peninsula in the northeastern Peloponnese, on the shore of the Argolic Gulf in the Argolis regional unit of Greece. It served as the first capital of the modern Greek state from 1828 to 1834 and remains one of the best-preserved historic port towns in the eastern Mediterranean.
