Zagreb City Tour: Upper Town, Cathedral and Historic Squares
Two hours through the layered history and hidden corners of Croatia's capital
The Zagreb City Tour is a two-hour guided walk through the medieval and baroque heart of Croatia's capital, led by a certified local guide fluent in multiple languages. Starting and finishing at the iconic Ban Jelacic Square, the route connects the city's two founding settlements, Kaptol and Gradec, and reveals both well-known landmarks and lesser-told stories. This experience suits first-time visitors and returning travellers who want genuine context behind what they see.
Zagreb developed from two rival hilltop settlements separated by a small stream, and the tension and cooperation between them shaped the city's character for centuries. Walking between these two historic districts today, you move through stone gates, past baroque churches, and alongside open-air markets that have operated on the same ground for generations. A certified guide connects the physical landscape to the political, religious, and everyday history that most visitors miss when exploring alone.
The itinerary balances major civic landmarks with intimate street-level details, from the coloured tile roof of St. Mark's Church to the narrow lanes leading to the medieval Lotrscak Tower. The route concludes with a descent via the Zagreb Funicular, one of the shortest funiculars in Europe, which has been carrying passengers between the Upper and Lower Town since 1890. By the end of the walk, the layout and logic of central Zagreb become clear in a way that independent exploration rarely achieves.
This tour is confirmed when at least four participants are registered, so early booking is recommended, particularly during the busy spring and summer season. The moderate difficulty rating reflects the uphill sections through the Upper Town, though the pace is relaxed and the guide adjusts to the group. Comfortable footwear and a light layer for the shaded stone streets are practical considerations.

Tour Itinerary
The tour assembles at Zagreb's main square, named after the 19th-century Croatian ban and military commander Josip Jelacic. The guide introduces the layout of the city and the historical relationship between the two founding hills visible from the square.
The group walks up to Kaptol, the ecclesiastical settlement, where the Zagreb Cathedral dominates the skyline with its neo-Gothic twin spires. Nearby, the Dolac farmers market offers a living picture of daily Zagreb life, with vendors selling local produce, cheese, and flowers on the terraced open-air platform.
A short walking street marks the historic boundary between Kaptol and Gradec, the two medieval settlements that were once rivals with separate administrations and defences. Today this is one of the most pleasant pedestrian corridors in the city centre, lined with cafes and small shops.
Entering the Upper Town through the medieval Stone Gate, the group visits the core of Gradec, which still houses Croatia's Parliament and Government buildings. St. Mark's Church, with its famous tiled roof, and the baroque St. Catherine's Church are among the architectural focal points the guide addresses in detail.
The 13th-century Lotrscak Tower stands at the southern edge of Gradec and once formed part of the city's defensive walls. A cannon fired from the tower each day at noon is a tradition maintained since 1877, and the guide explains its origin and continuing civic significance.
The tour concludes with a descent on the Zagreb Funicular, which covers a track of just 66 metres at a 52-degree incline and has been in continuous operation since 1890. The group arrives back at Ban Jelacic Square, completing a circular route through the historic core of the city.
