Zekreet, Richard Serra Sculpture & Mushroom Rock Formation
Where desert art, raw geology, and quiet coastline converge on Qatar's western edge
This Qatar West Coast tour takes you through one of the country's most visually striking corridors, combining a world-class outdoor sculpture installation with a naturally sculpted rock formation and the atmospheric ruins of a film set village in the heart of the Zekreet peninsula.
The route begins with a pickup from within Doha city limits and heads northwest, passing through Al-Shahaniya, a city renowned for its camel racing track that draws both domestic and international competitions between November and February. The landscape opens up progressively as the urban outskirts give way to gravel plains and low desert escarpments.
At the Brouq Nature Reserve, four large weathering steel plates placed by American sculptor Richard Serra rise from the pale terrain with a quiet authority, creating a dialogue between industrial form and ancient landscape. The installation is one of the most significant works of site-specific art in the Gulf region.
The tour concludes at the Mushroom Rock Formation, a naturally eroded sandstone structure whose distinctive silhouette has been shaped over millennia by wind abrasion. The Film City, a recreated Arabic village tucked behind a canyon near Zekreet, provides an additional layer of historical and cinematic atmosphere along the way.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you from within Doha city limits and the journey west begins. The route heads toward the open desert terrain of central Qatar.
Pass through Al-Shahaniya, approximately one hour north of downtown Doha. Between November and February, this venue hosts both local and international camel racing tournaments.
Arrive at the outdoor installation inside the Brouq Nature Reserve, where four large Cor-Ten steel plates form a contemplative work by sculptor Richard Serra. The surrounding flat desert amplifies the visual impact of the piece.
Explore the abandoned film set village built to resemble a traditional Arabic settlement, positioned behind a natural canyon. The site has an eerie, ghost-town quality that draws comparison to old American western towns.
The final stop is the Mushroom Rock Formation, a surreal sandstone structure eroded into its distinctive mushroom shape by centuries of wind. It is one of Qatar's most photographed natural landmarks.
