2026 Total Solar Eclipse Tour in Iceland — 6-Day Guided Adventure
Witness a celestial wonder above volcanoes, glaciers, and black sand beaches in the Land of Fire and Ice.
The 2026 Total Solar Eclipse Iceland tour offers a rare front-row seat to one of nature's most spectacular events, set against some of the planet's most dramatic landscapes. On August 12, 2026, the moon will completely obscure the sun over Iceland for the first time since 1954, casting totality over the Reykjanes Peninsula, Snæfellsnes, and the Westfjords. This six-day guided tour is designed to place you in the best possible position to experience both the eclipse and the country's most iconic natural wonders.
Iceland's geological variety makes it an extraordinary backdrop for this astronomical event. From the geothermal fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula to the thundering waterfalls of the South Coast and the ancient lava corridors of Þingvellir, the itinerary weaves together tectonic drama and celestial spectacle in a single journey.
Each day is structured around a combination of guided exploration and purposeful travel, ensuring that participants reach the eclipse viewing site well ahead of totality. The route also accounts for Iceland's changeable weather, selecting coastal and highland positions that maximize viewing conditions along the path of totality.
Accommodation ranges from centrally located city hotels in Reykjavik to countryside properties close to key natural sites. Meals, thermal bathing experiences, and all specialized equipment for glacier hiking are included at relevant stages, reducing logistical complexity for travelers.
Tour Highlights
Watch totality from the Reykjanes Lighthouse as the moon fully covers the sun on August 12, 2026, marking Iceland's first total solar eclipse since 1954.
Visit Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Brúarfoss, and Glymur — five of Iceland's most celebrated waterfalls across multiple regions.
Hike on a glacier with a certified guide, using crampons on ancient ice laced with lava deposits from past volcanic eruptions on the South Coast.
Cross the Bridge Between Continents on the Reykjanes Peninsula — a pedestrian walkway spanning the gap between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Relax in geothermal waters at both Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik and Hvammsvík Nature Baths, two of Iceland's most scenic thermal bathing facilities.
Explore Þingvellir National Park, the original seat of Iceland's Althingi parliament and a UNESCO World Heritage Site sitting on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Dine on fresh Icelandic seafood and locally sourced ingredients at Kopar and Sjávargrillið restaurants, with three-course meals included on two evenings.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Travelers arrive independently and check in to Center Hotel Laugavegur. The afternoon includes a self-guided walk through downtown Reykjavik, with an optional visit to Hallgrímskirkja church. The group meets at the hotel at 14:00 before heading to Sky Lagoon for a relaxation session overlooking the North Atlantic. The day concludes with a three-course dinner at Kopar restaurant on the old harbour.
The classic Golden Circle route takes the group to Þingvellir National Park, the geothermal Geysir area, and the double-cascade of Gullfoss waterfall. The day ends with a 6 to 7 km (approximately 4 miles) hike to Brúarfoss, a waterfall noted for its vivid blue water channels set in open highland terrain. Total walking time is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours with no significant elevation gain.
The tour explores Lake Kleifarvatn, the Seltún geothermal area, craters from the 2021 volcanic eruptions, and Gunnuhver hot spring before reaching the Bridge Between Continents. The group then positions at the Reykjanes Lighthouse for the total solar eclipse, with the partial phase beginning around 17:47 local time and totality following shortly after. This is the central event of the entire tour.
The South Coast day covers Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where a path leads behind the curtain of water, followed by a certified glacier hike on Sólheimajökull with crampons and all equipment provided. The group then visits Reynisfjara black sand beach and its dramatic basalt column formations before finishing at Skógafoss waterfall. Both Hekla volcano and the Eyjafjallajökull glacier-volcano are visible from the road.
A 7 km loop trail with 220 meters of ascent leads to Glymur, Iceland's second tallest waterfall, with panoramic views of the surrounding fjord. Before the hike, the group stops at a local bakery for picnic supplies. The afternoon is spent at Hvammsvík Nature Baths, a multi-pool thermal facility on a fjord with optional ocean swimming. The day concludes with a three-course seafood dinner at Sjávargrillið restaurant.
After breakfast, travelers make their own way to Keflavik International Airport. The Flybus airport transfer service is recommended and bookable independently. Hotel checkout follows standard procedure.
