Rio de Janeiro Tijuca Forest Mountain Bike Tour
Pedal through the world's largest urban rainforest and discover Rio's wild heart from the saddle
This Tijuca Forest mountain bike tour takes riders through one of the most remarkable natural environments found within any city on earth, combining steep forest climbs, sweeping city viewpoints, and genuine wildlife encounters along a route rated suitable for most fitness levels.
From the base in Cosme Velho, the ride moves quickly from urban streets into dense Atlantic rainforest, where the canopy closes overhead and the noise of the city fades. The pace is relaxed enough for regular stops, allowing riders to absorb the landscape rather than simply pass through it.
Wildlife sightings are a genuine part of the experience on this route. Sloths, Capuchin monkeys, marmosets, quatis, armadillos, and toucans have all been spotted by riders on previous outings, particularly along the Redeemer Road section where traffic is restricted to cyclists and pedestrians.
The tour also weaves in layers of Rio's social and environmental history, from the story of the Carioca river and the water infrastructure that once sustained the city, to the construction of the Christ the Redeemer statue and the ecological recovery of the forest itself.

Tour Itinerary
The tour begins at the operator's base in Cosme Velho, where guides walk riders through the planned route and explain the features of the bikes. Personal belongings can be left securely at the base throughout the ride.
An early stop at a viewpoint facing north across the city provides sightlines toward Maracana Stadium and the Prazeres favela. This is one of the less-visited perspectives on Rio's sprawling urban geography.
Riders visit the historic infrastructure built around the Carioca river, once the primary water source for the city and the origin of the term Carioca used to describe Rio's residents. Guides explain the connections between the river, the forest, and the city's development.
This optional stop requires the steepest ascent of the ride but rewards the effort with some of the most striking views available on the route. Riders can choose to skip this section if preferred.
Located below the statue, the Visitor Centre holds exhibits on the construction of Christ the Redeemer, the history of the Tijuca Forest, and details about the species that live within it. This is a good rest point before the final section.
The final 5-kilometre stretch is closed to private vehicles, creating a calm and largely flat environment well-suited to wildlife observation. A roadside waterfall along the way offers a natural opportunity to cool down before the ride concludes.
