Þórsmörk Super Jeep Tour — 2 Days & 1 Night in the Valley of Thor
Spend a night in one of Iceland's most treasured nature reserves, surrounded by glaciers, volcanoes, and untamed wilderness.
The Þórsmörk Super Jeep overnight tour takes you deep into a valley that Icelanders hold close to their hearts, offering glacial river crossings, dramatic mountain scenery, and a rare chance to sleep amid the silence of a protected highland reserve.
Þórsmörk sits at the meeting point of three glaciers — Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull — forming a landscape shaped by centuries of volcanic activity and glacial erosion. Road F249, the only route in, crosses multiple unbridged glacial rivers that only a modified Super Jeep can safely navigate.
The 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull left a visible mark on the route, most dramatically at Gígjökull glacier, where a torrent of water, ice, and ash comparable in volume to the Mississippi River carved through the terrain in a single day. Visiting this site puts the raw force of Iceland's geology into immediate perspective.
Since the 1918 eruption of Katla, Þórsmörk has been designated a Natural Mountain Reserve. That protection has allowed the valley to develop a rich cover of moss, fern, and birchwood — an unusual contrast to the bare volcanic terrain found elsewhere in Iceland's highlands.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you from your accommodation in the morning and the group heads east along the South Coast toward the highlands. The route passes through some of Iceland's most recognisable coastal scenery before turning inland.
Entering road F249, the Super Jeep begins its first glacial river crossings. The group stops at Gígjökull glacier, where the impact of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption is clearly visible in the reshaped terrain and exposed ice.
A short hike at Steinholt gives the group an introduction to the valley's scale and character. The tour then continues to Húsadalur for an overnight stay, with a BBQ dinner and time to take in the evening quiet of the reserve.
After breakfast on day two, the group explores the valley's protected interior on foot and by vehicle. The mix of moss-covered ground, birchwood stands, and glacier views makes this one of the most distinctive hiking environments in Iceland.
Heading back toward Reykjavík, the tour stops at Seljalandsfoss waterfall and along the black sand beaches of the South Coast. The group arrives back at their accommodation by the end of the day.
