South Coast & Katla Ice Cave: Waterfalls, Glaciers & Coastal Wonders
A full-day journey through Iceland's most iconic southern landscapes, from thundering waterfalls to a world of ancient glacial ice.
The Katla Ice Cave and South Coast tour offers a rare opportunity to explore Iceland's most celebrated natural landmarks in a single, well-paced day departing from and returning to Reykjavík. You will stand beneath two of the country's most photographed waterfalls and then venture beneath the surface of the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier.
The route southeast from Reykjavík passes through a shifting panorama of lava fields, coastal cliffs, and volcanic terrain before reaching the village of Vík. From there, expert guides lead the group into the Katla Ice Cave, where crystal-blue ice formations and layered geological history fill every passage.
On the return leg, two stops at Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss allow you to experience the raw force of Iceland's waterfall scenery from ground level and, in the case of Seljalandsfoss, from directly behind the falling water. The combination of glacial cave and cascading water makes this one of the most complete introductions to Iceland's South Coast.
Tour Highlights
Explore the interior of the Katla Ice Cave inside the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, guided by specialists who explain the cave's glacial and volcanic origins.
Stand at the base of Skógafoss, a 60-metre waterfall, and climb the adjacent staircase for a panoramic view of the South Coast.
Walk behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss on the unique path that circles the waterfall and offers a perspective unavailable at most natural sites.
Travel through the coastal village of Vík, set against dramatic black sand beaches and the towering Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
Cover Iceland's entire South Coast corridor in one day, from Reykjavík through lava fields, volcanic highlands, and Atlantic shoreline.
Observe the contrasting landscapes of Iceland's interior and coast, including the transition from highland plateau to sea-facing cliffs near Vík.
Itinerary
The tour departs from Reykjavík and heads southeast along the Ring Road. The drive passes through lava fields and open farmland before the landscape transitions to coastal terrain.
The group arrives in Vík, a small coastal settlement framed by basalt cliffs and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara. The Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the North Atlantic are visible from shore.
Expert guides lead the group into the Katla Ice Cave beneath the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. The cave interior features layered ice, volcanic ash deposits, and blue-toned formations shaped by centuries of glacial movement.
The route back toward Reykjavík stops at Skógafoss, where the falls drop 60 metres over a sheer cliff. A staircase alongside the waterfall leads to an elevated viewing platform above the cascade.
The final stop is Seljalandsfoss, where a walking path passes directly behind the waterfall. The enclosed perspective and surrounding greenery make this a distinctive end to the day's itinerary.
The group returns to Reykjavík, completing the full circuit of Iceland's South Coast in approximately eleven hours. Guests are dropped off at the original departure point.
