Self Drive: Drysuit Snorkeling in Silfra with Underwater Photos
Float through crystal-clear glacial water between two tectonic plates in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Drysuit snorkeling in Silfra places you inside one of the world's most celebrated dive sites, a freshwater fissure located within Thingvellir National Park, roughly 50 km from Reykjavik. The water here filters through volcanic rock for decades before reaching Silfra, producing visibility that stretches the length of the fissure itself. Your underwater photos will capture a world that very few people ever witness firsthand.
Silfra sits at the meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it geologically unique on the planet. The fissure descends to depths of 60 to 63 metres, and the water temperature remains consistently cold year-round, which is why a drysuit is provided to ensure thermal protection during the experience. No prior diving certification or snorkeling experience is required to join this tour.
The drysuit is constructed from multiple layers of insulating fabric that seal out the water entirely, allowing participants to stay warm on the surface throughout the snorkel. Because you self-drive to the site, you have flexibility in your arrival and can combine this excursion with other stops around the Golden Circle route. An underwater camera or photography service is included to document your time beneath the surface.
Thingvellir National Park itself carries significant cultural and historical weight as the site of Iceland's ancient parliament, the Althing, and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. Arriving on your own schedule means you can explore the park's walking paths and viewpoints before or after your snorkel session. The combination of geological wonder and cultural heritage makes this one of the most layered day trips available from Reykjavik.

How the Experience Unfolds
Make your own way from Reykjavik or any Golden Circle stop to the Silfra parking area inside Thingvellir. The drive takes approximately 50 minutes from the capital and the route is straightforward on the ring road.
Your guide meets you at the designated meeting point near the Silfra dock and briefs you on safety procedures and snorkeling technique. You are fitted with your drysuit, hood, gloves, fins, and mask before entering the water.
You descend into Silfra through a controlled entry point and begin floating through the fissure's main chambers. The water is so clear that the geology beneath you is visible in full detail as you drift with the gentle current.
The route passes through distinct sections of the fissure, including the wide open Silfra Hall and the narrow Lava Cathedral, each offering different perspectives on the underwater landscape. Your guide keeps pace with the group and points out features along the way.
Throughout the snorkel, underwater photos are captured to document your experience inside the fissure. These images are provided to you after the session as part of the tour package.
You exit the water at the lagoon end of the fissure and return to the changing area to remove your gear. The guide debriefs the group and you are free to continue exploring the national park or drive onward.
