Small Group Tour to Etna and Taormina from Catania
From volcanic craters to ancient theatres — a full day across two of Sicily's most iconic destinations
This small group tour to Etna and Taormina from Catania combines the raw geological drama of Europe's most active volcano with the refined beauty of a hilltop town that has captivated travellers for centuries. Departing from Catania, the itinerary moves through lava fields, a cave, an organic farm, a coastal nature reserve, and the historic streets of Taormina.
The southern slopes of Etna receive the group first, ascending to Rifugio Sapienza at nearly 2,000 metres. Here, the guide contextualises the volcano's eruptive history and points out the Silvestri Craters formed during past eruptions. Those wishing to go higher may opt for the cable car and four-wheel-drive vehicles to reach approximately 2,900 metres, where the central crater and southeast crater come into view — an experience subject to weather and volcanic conditions and payable separately on-site.
After Etna, the group enters a lava cave equipped with helmets and torches, then visits an organic farmhouse in Zafferana for tastings of local honey, wine, and oil. The afternoon is devoted to Taormina, beginning with a stop at Isola Bella, a small island wildlife reserve connected to the shore by a narrow sandbar on the Ionian coast. The town itself rewards walkers with its medieval gates, baroque architecture, and views that stretch across the bay.
Taormina's main pedestrian artery, Corso Umberto, runs between Porta Messina and Porta Catania and is lined with artisan shops, cafes, and historic buildings. Notable landmarks along the route include Palazzo Corvaja, Piazza IX Aprile, the Clock Tower, the Fortress Cathedral, and the Old Abbey. The optional visit to the Greek-Roman Theatre and the Museum of Arts and Folk Traditions is available for a separate fee paid directly at the venue.

Guests choose between a nature walk within the Etna Park up to around 2,000 metres or the optional paid ascent by cable car to 2,504 metres and by four-wheel-drive vehicle to approximately 2,900 metres. The higher option provides views of the central and southeast craters, subject to conditions.
