Delft Quest: The Blue Pottery Mystery of Old Delft
Track down the Pottery Pigeons through the canals and courtyards of historic Delft.
This Delft mystery walking tour drops you into a centuries-old intrigue: a stolen tulip vase, a shadowy guild of thieves, and eleven landmarks that hold the clues you need to recover what was taken before the Royal family arrives.
Using the Questo app on your smartphone, you move at your own pace through the historic heart of Delft, stopping at some of the city's most significant sites. Each location presents a riddle that must be solved before the next stop is revealed, turning a walk through the city into an active investigation.
The route runs from the medieval Eastern Gate through the Koornmarkt canal district, across Market Square, and into the quieter lanes around the Old Church and Museum Prinsenhof. It ends at Windmill de Roos, a 17th-century mill that has stood on the edge of the city since 1679.
No prior knowledge of Dutch history or Delft is required. The experience is designed for curious visitors who want to engage with the city rather than simply pass through it.

Route Overview
The starting point of the quest is Delft's only surviving city gate, a Brick Gothic structure built around 1400 and given its distinctive octagonal spires around 1510. The other gates were demolished in the 19th century, making this a rare remnant of the medieval fortified city.
The route moves into the Koornmarkt, one of Delft's most recognizable canal streets, and continues past the Medisch Farmaceutisch Museum, which holds a collection of antique medical and pharmaceutical instruments. The Gothic Sint Hippolytuskerk chapel, designated a Rijksmonument in 1967, stands nearby on the east side of Oude Delft.
At the center of the city lies the Markt, one of the largest historic market squares in Europe at 120 by 50 meters, bordered by the Renaissance City Hall to the west and the Nieuwe Kerk to the east. The Nieuwe Kerk tower, built between 1396 and 1496, houses 48 bells including 18 cast by Francois Hemony in 1659.
The building that now houses the Vermeer Centrum was once the seat of the St. Lucasgilde, the guild of painters and glassmakers that Johannes Vermeer joined in 1653. Saint Lucas was the patron saint of painters, and the guild played a central role in the artistic life of 17th-century Delft.
The Old Church is considered to have been founded in 1246, when Count William II granted Delft its charter, and grew over subsequent centuries into a large Gothic basilica. Nearby, the Prinsenhof palace served as the residence of William of Orange until his assassination there in 1584; the bullet holes from that event remain visible at the main staircase.
The final stop is Windmill de Roos, built in 1679 for the grinding of corn, on a site where a mill has stood since at least 1352. It is the only windmill remaining of the fifteen that once operated in and around Delft.
