Salzburg Quest: Solve the Mystery of Mozart's Lost Opera
Follow the ghosts of Mozart, Constanze, and Salieri through the UNESCO-listed heart of Salzburg to uncover a masterpiece that history forgot.
This Salzburg mystery quest invites you into the story of Anne, an aspiring pianist who arrives in the city chasing a relative's letter and the promise of a lost Mozart opera. Over 85 minutes and 1.9 kilometres of Salzburg's Old Town, you piece together clues at ten landmarks guided by the whispers of Mozart himself, his wife Constanze, and the infamous Antonio Salieri.
The experience runs entirely through your smartphone via the Questo app, so there are no fixed departure times and no waiting for a group. You move through the city at your own pace, stopping when curiosity calls, and the route never strays beyond the UNESCO-listed historic centre.
The narrative draws on genuine history: the rooms where Mozart composed, the bridge that appeared in Hollywood film, the square where Constanze lived after her husband's death. Every stop adds a layer to a mystery that asks what happens when a masterpiece is lost to time.
No specialised knowledge of classical music or Mozart's biography is required to enjoy the quest. The story is written to engage first-time visitors and seasoned music lovers alike, balancing historical fact with immersive fiction.

Route Overview
Reconstructed after partial wartime destruction and reopened in 1996, the Residence displays Mozart's original instruments in the historic Dancing Masters's Hall and brings the family's everyday life into vivid relief.
This Art Nouveau pedestrian bridge, completed in 1903 through a private citizens' initiative, gained wider recognition through its appearance in the Hollywood film The Sound of Music.
The Mozart family lived on the third floor of No. 9 Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on 27 January 1756, the seventh child of musician Leopold Mozart.
Cafe Tomaselli has occupied its position on the Alter Markt for over 150 years. Nearby Mozartplatz is home to the house where Constanze Mozart-Nissen once lived, marked to this day by a commemorative plaque.
The seventeenth-century Baroque cathedral, founded on a site dating to 774, anchors the southern edge of the Old Town. The quest then climbs to the 640-metre Kapuzinerberg, a forested hill above the Salzach that offers a final perspective over the city.
