Birdwatching in Ria Formosa - Cabanas de Tavira
A guided boat journey through one of Portugal's most important protected wetlands, led by a biologist skipper.
This birdwatching tour in Ria Formosa takes you deep into a designated Ramsar wetland that shelters over 200 bird species across a mosaic of lagoons, mudflats, salt pans, and reedbeds. Your skipper is a qualified biologist guide, and binoculars plus a bird catalogue are available on board.
Ria Formosa Natural Park stretches for 60 kilometres along the Algarve coast, protecting 14,000 hectares of habitat behind a network of barrier islands and dunes. The reserve regularly hosts more than 20,000 waterbirds, with numbers peaking during winter migration.
The park sits on a critical flyway between Europe and Africa, making it a reliable location for spotting both resident species and long-distance migrants in a single outing. Habitats shift from open water to salt marshes and pine woods within a short distance, keeping sightings varied throughout the trip.
Among the species regularly observed here are Purple Swamp-hen and Little Bittern, two localised birds not easily found elsewhere in Portugal. The combination of habitats and protected status makes this one of the most productive birdwatching destinations on the Iberian Peninsula.

Tour Itinerary
The tour begins at the meeting point in Cabanas de Tavira, where your biologist guide introduces the route and the species you may encounter. Binoculars and bird catalogues are distributed before boarding.
The boat moves into the protected waterways of Ria Formosa Natural Park, passing through open lagoons and inter-tidal channels. This is prime habitat for wading birds, egrets, and herons feeding along the shoreline.
The guide navigates toward the salt pans and exposed mudflats, where species such as flamingo, spoonbill, and oystercatcher are frequently observed. Bar-tailed godwits and Mediterranean gulls are also common in this zone.
Moving into sheltered reedbeds and salt marshes, the tour focuses on passerines and rarer species including Purple Swamp-hen and Little Bittern. White storks and cormorants are regularly spotted here as well.
The boat returns to the departure point with time for questions and species identification using the on-board catalogue. The biologist guide provides context on the conservation status of the park and its migratory importance.
