Hardcore Tour for Railfans: 4 Scenic Swiss Express Trains in 1 Day
Nearly 900 kilometres of Alpine railways, four panoramic express routes, one extraordinary day.
This ambitious full-circle rail journey puts Swiss panoramic express trains at the centre of a single, relentless, deeply rewarding day that connects Zurich to the Italian border and back through the heart of the Alps. Covering Voralpen-Express, Luzern-Interlaken Express, GoldenPass Express, Centovalli Express and the Gotthard Base Tunnel in one sweep, the itinerary is designed for serious rail enthusiasts who want no filler, only railways. Moderate fitness and a high tolerance for awe are the only requirements.
Switzerland has built its identity around precision and natural drama, and nowhere is that combination more apparent than on its railway network. Each of the four express routes on this tour was engineered to showcase a different face of the country: the rolling pastoral hills of the Voralpen region, the glacial lake corridor between Lucerne and Interlaken, the grand sweep of the GoldenPass from the Bernese Oberland to Lake Geneva, and the wild gorge country of the Centovalli straddling the Swiss-Italian border.
The day begins in Zurich and ends in Zurich, but the journey between those two moments passes through UNESCO World Heritage sites, medieval towns, Mediterranean-influenced Ticino, the Italian market town of Domodossola, and finally the record-breaking Gotthard Base Tunnel at 200 km/h. Switzerland covers an extraordinary variety of landscapes and cultures, and this tour samples most of them before sunset.
The pace is deliberately fast and the distances are real. This is not a leisurely excursion; it is a structured rail challenge that requires commitment. Those who complete it will have experienced more of Switzerland's rail geography in a single day than most visitors manage in a week.
Tour Highlights
Four of Switzerland's most celebrated panoramic express trains in a single day, each covering a distinct and visually striking region.
A near-900-kilometre full-circle route from Zurich through eastern Switzerland, the Bernese Oberland, Lake Geneva, Valais, northern Italy and Ticino.
Passage through multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites including St. Gallen's Abbey district and the medieval fortifications of Bellinzona.
A genuine cross-border segment into Italy via the historic Simplon Tunnel, with a stop in the arcaded market town of Domodossola.
The high-speed return through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest railway tunnel at 57 kilometres, reached at up to 200 km/h.
Five Alpine lakes, countless waterfalls, terraced Lavaux vineyards and the twin-lake panorama of Interlaken along the route.
The Centovalli narrow-gauge line through deep gorges, chestnut forests and stone villages — one of the least-known but most rewarding rail corridors in the Alps.
Itinerary Overview
Departing Zurich, the first leg travels east to St. Gallen — gateway to a UNESCO-listed Abbey district — before boarding the Voralpen-Express across the Sitter viaduct and through Toggenburg's pastoral hills. The route passes the upland moor near Rothenthurm and Rapperswil before arriving at the historic lakeside city of Lucerne, where the Kapellbrücke and the Old Town offer a brief but memorable interlude.
The cogwheel-assisted Luzern-Interlaken Express climbs past five crystal-clear mountain lakes, waterfalls and sheer rock faces before cresting the Brünig Pass and descending toward Interlaken. The town, framed by Lake Thun and Lake Brienz with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau as a backdrop, marks the midpoint of the day. A brief stop at Spiez on Lake Thun adds views of its castle and vineyard-covered slopes.
The GoldenPass Express — a world-first thanks to its gauge-adjusting bogies — runs from Interlaken through Gstaad, Château-d'Oex and Montbovon to the lakeside resort of Montreux on Lake Geneva. Gstaad's luxury chalets, the balloon-festival town of Château-d'Oex and the Belle-Époque elegance of Montreux pass in sweeping panoramic sequence. The route then continues south through Brig and the Simplon Tunnel into Domodossola, Italy.
From the arcaded piazza of Domodossola, the narrow-gauge Centovalli Express winds for 52 kilometres through gorges, chestnut forests, bridges and stone-clinging villages before emerging at Locarno's palm-lined shore of Lake Maggiore. The journey crosses the Swiss-Italian cultural boundary and delivers passengers into Ticino's Mediterranean warmth. A connection through Bellinzona — with its trio of UNESCO-listed castles — follows before the final stage.
The return north is the day's most dramatic punctuation: a high-speed transit through the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest railway tunnel, opened in 2016 after 17 years of construction through solid granite. Trains reach up to 200 km/h inside the tunnel, covering the Alpine crossing in under 20 minutes. The tour ends where it began, in Zurich, completing a full-circle journey across the entire breadth and depth of Switzerland.
