Sal Island: 2-Hour Buggy Adventure to Desert and Beaches
Explore salt flats, wild beaches, and a natural reserve aboard a 500cc 4x4 automatic quad bike.
This Sal Island buggy tour takes you through the island's most striking southern landscapes in just two hours, combining desert terrain, coastal scenery, and protected nature in a single compact adventure. Guests are collected directly from their accommodation in Santa Maria, making the experience effortless from start to finish. The route is designed for all skill levels, with automatic 500cc quad bikes that require no prior off-road experience.
The southern tip of Sal conceals a variety of contrasting environments that are difficult to reach independently. Within a short drive, the landscape shifts from shimmering salt flats and wind-sculpted dunes to rugged volcanic reserve terrain and some of the island's most secluded beaches. This tour connects all of those points in a logical, guided loop.
Serra Negra, the natural reserve of Sal, provides one of the most rewarding viewpoints on the island. On clear days, the panorama extends across the entire southern coast and, conditions permitting, reaches as far as the neighbouring island of Boa Vista. The stop at Palha Verde oasis adds an unexpected contrast to the surrounding desert environment.
Ponta Preta, widely regarded as the finest beach on Sal, marks one of the final stops before the return to Santa Maria. Its broad sweep of white sand and clear water offers a fitting conclusion to a route that crosses some of the most varied terrain on the island.

Itinerary
The tour begins with a pickup from your accommodation in Santa Maria. You are transferred to the main office, where you present a valid driving licence and receive your safety gear before setting off.
The first stop takes you to the salt flats on the outskirts of Santa Maria, surrounded by large natural sand dunes. The flat, reflective terrain creates a striking visual contrast with the surrounding landscape.
The route continues along Kite Beach before entering Serra Negra, the protected natural reserve of Sal. From the viewpoint here, you can see the full southern coast of the island and, on clear days, Boa Vista in the distance.
The circuit crosses into the desert interior of Sal, stopping at the Palha Verde oasis. The contrast between the barren surrounding terrain and the oasis makes this one of the most memorable points on the route.
The tour concludes at Ponta Preta, widely considered the finest beach on Sal Island. There is time to stop and take in the scenery before heading back toward Santa Maria.
After the beach stop, the group returns to the main office and guests are transferred back to their accommodation in Santa Maria, completing the two-hour circuit.
