Saco Bravo Waterfall Trek from Ponta Negra Beach
A demanding trail through protected Atlantic Forest leading to one of Paraty's most secluded waterfalls
The Saco Bravo Waterfall trek is a challenging 8-kilometre journey through the Juatinga State Ecological Reserve, rewarding those who complete it with a pristine waterfall deep inside one of Brazil's last stretches of primary Atlantic Forest. This is not a leisurely walk — it is a full-bodied adventure designed for those who seek genuine wilderness.
The route departs from Ponta Negra Beach and follows a rugged path marked by significant elevation changes, dense forest cover, and uneven terrain. Participants should expect up to three hours of hiking in each direction, with the trail demanding steady focus and physical endurance throughout.
Because the Juatinga State Ecological Reserve is a protected area administered by INEA, all visitors must be accompanied by a Cadastur-accredited guide at all times. This regulation exists to preserve the reserve's biodiversity and to ensure the safety of trekkers on unmarked sections of the trail.

Itinerary
The experience begins at Ponta Negra Beach, the designated meeting point and trailhead. Your Cadastur-accredited guide will greet the group, review safety guidelines, and outline the route ahead.
The group enters the Juatinga State Ecological Reserve and begins the ascent into the Atlantic Forest. The terrain shifts quickly, introducing the first of many elevation changes along the trail.
Over approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, the group traverses 8 kilometres of challenging forest trail. Rest stops are taken as needed, and the guide points out notable plant and animal species along the way.
The group reaches Saco Bravo Waterfall, a reward for the effort invested in the hike. Time is allocated here to rest, swim if conditions allow, and take in the surroundings.
The group retraces the route back through the reserve, a journey of equivalent duration and difficulty. Pacing is adjusted based on the group's condition and remaining energy.
