Sabi Sands Sunset Safari: Open Vehicle Game Drive with Sundowners
Where the African wilderness meets the golden hour on an unforgettable open-vehicle safari drive.
The Sabi Sands Sunset Safari takes guests on a guided open-vehicle game drive through one of South Africa's most celebrated private game reserves, combining golden-hour wildlife sightings with sundowner refreshments and a nocturnal drive back through the bush.
Departing from Hazyview and surrounding accommodation, guests are transferred by air-conditioned vehicle to Umkumbe Bush Lodge inside the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve. The reserve shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park, giving wildlife unrestricted movement across a vast protected landscape and creating some of the finest big-five viewing on the continent.
As afternoon light softens across the savannah, an expert field guide leads the drive through open terrain in search of lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhino, and a wide array of plains game. The approach prioritizes low-impact viewing, keeping vehicle numbers and noise to a minimum around sensitive sightings.
After the formal sundowner pause, the drive continues well into darkness, when nocturnal species such as genets, civets, and African wild cats become active. Guides use a handheld spotlight to scan the vegetation, turning the second half of the experience into a distinctly different chapter of the same journey.

Itinerary Overview
Guests are collected from their accommodation in Hazyview and surrounding areas in a comfortable, air-conditioned transfer vehicle. The drive to Umkumbe Bush Lodge takes approximately one hour and twenty minutes through the scenic Mpumalanga lowveld.
Guests are welcomed at the lodge and introduced to their field guide before boarding the open safari vehicle. A safety and conduct briefing is provided before entering the reserve.
The drive sets off into the reserve as afternoon temperatures cool, when predators and large herbivores become more active. The guide navigates off-road tracks in search of the big five and supporting cast of wildlife unique to this ecosystem.
At a carefully selected location, the vehicle pauses to allow guests to step off and take in the African sunset with a complimentary drink and snacks. This is a moment of stillness in the middle of the wilderness, with the sounds of the bush as the only backdrop.
After dark, the guide uses a spotlight to scan the reserve's vegetation for nocturnal species including genets, civets, owls, and other creatures that emerge after sunset. This second phase of the drive offers a completely different perspective on the reserve.
Guests are transferred back from Umkumbe Bush Lodge to their accommodation in Hazyview and surrounding areas, completing a full evening in the African bush. Drop-off is at the original pickup address.
