Reykjanes Peninsula Private Tour
Venture into Iceland's volcanic frontier, where two continents meet and the earth never stops moving.
The Reykjanes Peninsula Private Tour takes you through one of Iceland's most geologically active landscapes, from boiling mud pools and steaming geothermal fields to a bridge that literally spans two continental plates. This exclusive private experience is rated very easy, making it suitable for virtually all visitors arriving in Iceland.
Designated a UNESCO Global Geopark, the Reykjanes Peninsula is shaped by centuries of volcanic forces that continue to reshape the land today. Before March 2021, the area had gone over 700 years without an eruption, yet the evidence of both ancient and recent volcanic events is visible at nearly every turn.
The peninsula sits at the point where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge emerges from the ocean, physically dividing the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. This rare geological phenomenon makes the landscape unlike almost anywhere else on Earth, offering visitors an intimate encounter with the planet's raw structural forces.
Lake Kleifarvatn, the Seltun geothermal field, Gunnuhver hot spring, the Bridge Between Continents, and the Reykjanes Lighthouse each tell a distinct chapter of the peninsula's story. A private format means the pace, focus, and itinerary can be adjusted to match your interests throughout the four-hour journey.
Tour Highlights
Witness the bubbling mud pools of the Seltun geothermal field, where sulphurous steam rises from hillside vents surrounded by pale, mineral-stained earth.
Stand on the Bridge Between Continents and look out over a dramatic lava field that marks the visible boundary between the Eurasian and North American plates.
Explore Gunnuhver, one of Iceland's most active geothermal areas, where boiling mud pools and powerful steam vents create a striking, otherworldly scene.
Visit Lake Kleifarvatn, the largest lake on the peninsula, known for its stark beauty, mysterious history, and the cold war spy equipment once discovered on its lakebed.
Discover the Reykjanes Lighthouse, a historic maritime landmark perched at the edge of the North Atlantic with panoramic views of Iceland's rugged coastline.
Travel in a fully private setting with no shared group dynamics, allowing for a flexible and personalised exploration of the peninsula's most significant sites.
Itinerary
The largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula sits hidden between mountains not far from Reykjavik, spanning around 8 square kilometres and reaching nearly 100 metres in depth. A series of earthquakes in 2000 caused the lake to lose approximately 20 percent of its surface area, and during that period, boxes of Russian cold war surveillance equipment were found exposed on the lakebed.
Located just off the shores of Kleifarvatn, the Seltun geothermal field features naturally boiling mud pools set into pale, sulphur-streaked hillsides. The strong scent of sulphur and the slow bubbling of grey clay and geothermal water contrast sharply with the dark lava fields that border the area on all sides.
Gunnuhver is among the most active geothermal features on the peninsula, with vigorously boiling mud pools and high-pressure steam vents that rise dramatically against the Icelandic sky. The site offers a close-up view of the geothermal forces that have shaped this landscape for thousands of years.
This symbolic bridge spans a fissure in the middle of an ancient lava flow, positioned directly over the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. From here, views extend out to sea toward Eldey Island, home to one of the world's largest Northern Gannet colonies and the last known habitat of the extinct Great Auk.
Standing at the southwestern tip of the peninsula, the Reykjanes Lighthouse is one of Iceland's most recognisable maritime landmarks, offering sweeping views across the North Atlantic. The site carries strong historical significance for seafarers who have navigated these waters for centuries.
