Your first stop is Schermerhorn, home to three of the oldest traditional Dutch windmills in the country. One mill operates as a hands-on museum where you can climb through the structure and learn how these machines drained entire polders for centuries.

A short drive brings you to De Rijp, a canal-side village of beautifully preserved wooden houses and a distinguished town hall. The village functions as a living record of 17th-century Dutch prosperity, with streets and facades that have remained largely unchanged.

At the fishing village of Den Oever, a walk along the dike leads to a panoramic viewpoint above the Wadden Sea. Lunch follows at Restaurant Basalt, where locally caught seafood is the centrepiece of the menu.

The route into Friesland takes you across the full length of the Afsluitdijk, the 32-kilometre barrier that sealed off the former Zuiderzee in 1932. Driving this dike with open water on both sides is one of the most distinctive experiences the Netherlands offers.

In the Frisian town of Franeker, a guided walk takes in historic monuments before arriving at the Eise Eisinga Planetarium. Built between 1774 and 1781 by a wool comber working in his own home, this UNESCO-listed masterpiece still tracks planetary motion with its original mechanism on the ceiling above.
