Private Tour to Fatima Sanctuary and the Little Shepherds Houses
Walk the sacred paths of Cova da Iria and discover the village where three children changed religious history forever.
This private tour to Fatima Sanctuary offers an immersive, unhurried journey through one of the most visited pilgrimage sites on earth, with over 6.3 million visitors recorded in 2019 alone. The experience is designed for those who seek both spiritual depth and historical understanding in a single, carefully structured day.
The tour covers the full expanse of the Prayer Grounds at Cova da Iria before continuing to Aljustrel, the village located 2 kilometres from the Sanctuary where the three little shepherds — Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta — were born and raised. A traditional regional lunch is included at one of Fatima's well-regarded restaurants, offering dishes such as lamb stew, cod with chícharos, and regional desserts like farófias and almond pudding.
The afternoon route follows the path the children walked between their homes and the site of the apparitions. Stops include the Loca do Cabeço, Valinhos, the Hungarian Calvary, and the houses where Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta lived. The itinerary is rated easy and suitable for a wide range of travellers.
Tour Highlights
Visit the Chapel of the Apparitions, the spiritual heart of the Sanctuary, built on the exact spot where Our Lady of the Rosary appeared to the three seers.
Follow the Way of the Cross along the Path of the Little Shepherds, ending at the Hungarian Calvary with its chapel dedicated to St. Stephen.
Explore the birth houses of Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta in Aljustrel, preserved and open to visitors since their acquisition by the Sanctuary.
Discover the Shrine Museum, founded in 1955 to protect historical, artistic and ethnographic items tied to the apparitions and international pilgrimages.
Enjoy a traditional regional lunch featuring green soup, roasted cod, lamb stew and classic desserts from the Fatima region.
See the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, consecrated in 1953, where the tombs of Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia are held and visited by pilgrims worldwide.
Stand at Valinhos, the site of the fourth apparition of Our Lady on August 19, 1917, marked by a monument built with donations from Hungarian Catholics.
Itinerary
The visit begins at the Chapel of the Apparitions, built between April and June 1919 on the site where five of the six Marian apparitions occurred. Nearby, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary — first stone blessed in 1928, consecrated in 1953 — houses the tombs of the three little shepherds and fourteen side altars each depicting a mystery of the rosary.
The Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, consecrated on 12 October 2007, features an altar made from a single piece of local branco do mar stone with a fragment of marble from the tomb of the Apostle Peter set into its face. The surrounding squares contain statues of Popes John Paul II, Paul VI and Pius XII, alongside the 34-metre High Cross made of Corten steel.
Visitors encounter the Monument of the Berlin Wall, inaugurated on August 13, 1994, the Nativity Scene shaped as a triangle allusive to the Most Holy Trinity, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus architectural complex. The Shrine Museum, founded in 1955, holds relics and artefacts that document the history of the apparitions and global pilgrimages.
A sit-down lunch is served at one of Fatima's established restaurants, featuring local specialities including green soup, olive cabbages, cod roasted with chícharos, lamb stew with potatoes and rice morcelas. Desserts include farófias, cream milk, almond pudding and chocolate mousse.
The afternoon follows the path the little shepherds took from their village to Cova da Iria, passing through Valinhos — site of the fourth apparition on August 19, 1917. The route ends at the Hungarian Calvary, whose fourteen Via Sacra stations and chapel dedicated to St. Stephen were blessed on May 12, 1964.
In the village of Aljustrel, the tour visits the birth houses of Lucia (donated to the Shrine in 1981) and Francisco and Jacinta (acquired by the Shrine in 1996), as well as the House Museum of Aljustrel inaugurated in 1992. Nearby stands the Loca do Cabeço, where the first and third apparitions of the Angel to the seers occurred, and the parish church of Fatima where all three children were baptised.
