Amalfi Coast Private Tour: Positano, Emerald Grotto, Amalfi and Ravello
A full-day private journey along one of the world's most celebrated coastlines, from pastel-hued villages to ancient maritime heritage.
This Amalfi Coast private tour takes you through seven hours of dramatic coastal scenery, charming hilltop towns, and a UNESCO-listed cathedral city, all at a pace set entirely by your group.
The itinerary moves from the iconic waterfront lanes of Positano through the quieter clifftop settlements of Praiano and Conca dei Marini before descending into the sea caves of the Emerald Grotto. Each stop offers a distinct perspective on the Sorrentine Peninsula and the Tyrrhenian Sea below.
Amalfi itself, once a dominant Mediterranean maritime republic, anchors the middle of the day with its cathedral, ceramic shops, and layered medieval streetscape. The tour then rises inland to Ravello, where formal gardens and Romanesque architecture sit above the coastal noise.
Because the tour is private, there are no fixed group schedules to follow and no waiting for other travelers. The route, pace, and emphasis at each location can be adjusted to suit your interests on the day.
Tour Highlights
Walk the narrow, pastel-lined lanes of Positano, one of the most photographed villages on the Italian coast.
Enter the Emerald Grotto, a sea cave near Conca dei Marini where natural light turns the water a vivid green.
Visit Amalfi Cathedral, a Norman-Arab-Byzantine landmark at the heart of a former maritime republic declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Explore Villa Rufolo in Ravello, whose tiered gardens and tower views inspired Wagner and continue to draw artists from around the world.
Discover the quieter coastal towns of Praiano and Conca dei Marini, set on cliffs between Positano and Amalfi.
Travel as a private group with no shared itinerary, allowing flexibility at every stop along the route.
Itinerary
The tour begins in Positano, where terraced houses in shades of cream, ochre, and terracotta descend steeply toward the waterfront. Narrow pedestrian paths connect the main road to the beach, passing boutiques, ceramic workshops, and small churches along the way.
The route continues along the coastal road through Praiano and Conca dei Marini, two smaller settlements perched above the sea. These towns offer panoramic views of the coastline without the crowds found at the more visited stops.
The Emerald Grotto is accessible by elevator from the coastal road or by boat from the water. Inside, stalactites and stalagmites reflect in the shallow lagoon, whose color is produced by sunlight filtering through an underwater arch.
A two-hour stop in Amalfi allows time to visit the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, with its striking striped facade and ornate cloister. The surrounding streets are lined with shops selling local ceramics, limoncello, and handmade paper, a traditional craft the city has produced since the 13th century.
The final stop is Ravello, reached by a road that climbs sharply from the Amalfi waterfront into the hills above. Approximately one hour here covers the Duomo di Ravello and Villa Rufolo, whose gardens and belvedere overlook the full sweep of the coast below.
