Private Tour of Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus and the Corinth Canal from Athens
A full-day journey through ancient kingdoms, Venetian harbors, and one of the great feats of modern engineering
This private tour from Athens to Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus and the Corinth Canal brings together four of the Peloponnese's most compelling destinations in a single, well-paced day. Traveling exclusively as a private group, you move at your own rhythm, with no crowds to navigate and no shared itinerary to compromise.
The route follows the northeast arc of the Peloponnese, beginning with the dramatic slash of the Corinth Canal before pushing deeper into the Argolid, a region where layers of civilization sit one atop another. Bronze Age citadels, Venetian fortresses, classical theaters and Ottoman-era mosques coexist within a short drive of one another.
The day is designed to be accessible for all ages and fitness levels. Most walking is on relatively flat or gently sloping ground, and the pace allows time to linger at the sites that interest you most, whether that means spending longer inside the Mycenae museum or finding a table at one of Nafplio's waterfront cafes.
Tour Highlights
Stand at the edge of the Corinth Canal and watch vessels pass through the narrow 6.3-kilometer cut that separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnese.
Explore the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae, including the Lion's Gate, the Treasury of Atreus and the royal grave circles that yielded extraordinary gold artifacts.
Walk the cobblestone lanes of Nafplio, the Peloponnese's most elegant town and the first capital of the modern Greek state after independence in 1821.
Test the legendary acoustics of the Epidaurus theater, a 14,000-seat ancient venue where a coin dropped on the stage can be heard from the highest row.
Visit the Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus, the ancient world's most celebrated healing center and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
See the Palamidi and Bourtzi fortresses that define Nafplio's skyline, Venetian constructions that tell the story of the town's layered history.
Browse Nafplio's artisan shops and taste the town's celebrated gelato and loukoumades before heading to the final site of the day.
Itinerary Overview
The first stop is the Isthmus of Corinth, where the 19th-century canal cuts 79 meters deep through the rock. Alongside it, you will see the remains of the Ancient Diolkos, a paved trackway used in antiquity to haul boats overland between the Corinthian and Saronic gulfs. A cafe at the canal edge offers views of the passing vessels.
The UNESCO-listed citadel of Mycenae was the most powerful center of the late Bronze Age and the legendary kingdom of Agamemnon. The visit covers the Lion's Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, the Royal Palace, Grave Circles A and B, the Treasury of Atreus and the Tomb of Clytemnestra. The on-site archaeological museum displays gold funeral masks, weapons and frescoes recovered from the site.
Greece's first post-independence capital is a compact town of neoclassical mansions, narrow lanes and a harbor framed by two Venetian fortresses. Time is allocated for lunch at a traditional taverna, a walk through Syntagma Square, and visits to historically significant churches including St. Spyridon, where the first Greek governor Ioannis Kapodistrias was assassinated in 1831. The town's shops, gelato parlors and loukoumades vendors are part of the experience.
The final destination is the sanctuary complex at Epidaurus, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 4th-century BC theater remains one of the best-preserved ancient venues in the world, renowned for acoustics that carry sound with remarkable clarity from stage to upper tier. The archaeological museum holds reconstructed architectural elements and inscribed columns from the sanctuary, while the Asclepion itself was regarded as the birthplace of organized medicine in antiquity.
