Alexander The Great Private Tour from Athens
Trace the footsteps of Philip II and Alexander the Great across the ancient heartland of Macedonia in a single remarkable day.
The Alexander the Great Private Tour from Athens transports you from the Greek capital to two of the most historically significant archaeological sites in northern Greece, Pella and Vergina, within a single full-day journey that includes return flights to Thessaloniki.
This private experience is designed for travelers who want to engage directly with the legacy of ancient Macedonia without navigating logistics independently. Flight tickets, airport transfers, and a dedicated English-speaking driver are all arranged on your behalf.
The itinerary moves between two UNESCO-recognized landscapes: the sprawling ruins of the Macedonian capital at Pella and the royal burial grounds at Vergina, where excavations in 1977 changed the understanding of ancient Greek history. An optional licensed tour guide is available for those who want deeper interpretation at each site.

Itinerary
Your day begins with a hotel pickup in Athens followed by a transfer to Athens International Airport. The included flight to Thessaloniki takes approximately one hour, after which an English-speaking driver meets you at arrivals.
From Thessaloniki Airport, you travel approximately 45 minutes to the city of Pella in Central Macedonia. Pella served as the Macedonian capital from the late fifth century B.C. until the Roman conquest in 168 B.C., and it was the birthplace of Alexander the Great.
The site spans 1,000 acres and includes the northern palace hill, the central agora, and three sanctuaries dedicated to Thesmophoros, Venus, and Darrhon. The on-site museum displays excavation finds that illuminate daily life in the Macedonian capital during the reigns of Philip II and Alexander the Great.
The village of Vergina occupies the site of ancient Aigai, the original capital of Macedonia. In 1977, archaeologist Manolis Andronikos uncovered four burial sites here; three are attributed by most scholars to Philip II, one of his wives, and Alexander IV of Macedon.
The museum at Vergina is built directly over the tombs and presents the finds in context, including the gold larnaca bearing the Macedonian star that held Philip II's remains. The surrounding archaeological zone also encompasses the palace, the acropolis, and the ancient city.
After the Vergina visit, your driver transfers you back to Thessaloniki Airport for the one-hour return flight to Athens. Upon landing, a driver meets you at the arrivals exit and returns you to your hotel.
