South Coast Spectacular: Waterfalls & Glacier Hike
Walk behind waterfalls, hike a glacier, and stand on black volcanic sand — all in a single unforgettable day.
This Iceland South Coast private tour covers the region's most celebrated natural landmarks across 12 immersive hours, from cascading waterfalls to glacial ice fields and dramatic volcanic coastlines.
Departing from Reykjavik, the route follows the southern shore through a succession of landscapes that shift from lush river valleys to black sand beaches sculpted by Atlantic surf. Each stop has been chosen for its geological significance and visual impact.
The private format allows for a pace suited to your group, with the flexibility to linger where the scenery demands it. Whether your focus is photography, natural history, or simply absorbing Iceland's raw character, the itinerary accommodates all.
Moderate fitness is recommended, particularly for the glacier hike, which involves crampons and navigating uneven ice terrain. The remainder of the day's stops are accessible on foot with no technical experience required.
Tour Highlights
Walk behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss, a 60-meter waterfall fed by glacial meltwater from Eyjafjallajökull.
Stand at the base of Skógafoss and climb the adjacent staircase for elevated views across the southern plains.
Hike across Sólheimajökull Glacier with a certified guide, exploring crevasses and blue ice formations with crampons provided.

Enjoy a scenic lunch break in the coastal village of Vik, surrounded by cliffs and black sand shores.
Ideal for photography, the route delivers consistently dramatic light, mist, and geological formations throughout the day.
Itinerary
The first stop is Seljalandsfoss, where a path behind the falls allows visitors to view the cascade from within. Fed by the Seljalandsá River originating from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, the falls drop approximately 60 meters. Rainbows frequently form in the mist on clear days.
Skógafoss is one of Iceland's most recognized waterfalls, plunging 60 meters down a cliff that once formed the ancient coastline. A staircase alongside the falls provides an elevated perspective over the surrounding lowlands. The Skógá River, sourced from Eyjafjallajökull's glaciers, powers the cascade year-round.
A certified guide leads the group across Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Crampons are fitted on-site, and the hike covers blue ice formations, sculpted crevasses, and glacial ridges. Participants must be at least 8 years of age.
Reynisfjara's dark volcanic shoreline is formed from basalt eroded over centuries by the North Atlantic. The Hálsanefshellir basalt cave and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising offshore define the beach's dramatic character. Visitors are advised to remain cautious of the powerful and unpredictable surf.
The village of Vik í Mýrdal, situated roughly 180 kilometers southeast of Reykjavik, serves as the midpoint rest stop. The settlement offers cafes, shops, and views toward the Reynisfjall cliffs. It functions as a practical and scenic base for the afternoon portion of the tour.
Dyrhólaey is a headland offering sweeping views of the black sand coastline and the open Atlantic. During nesting season, puffins, guillemots, and other seabirds occupy the cliff ledges. A lighthouse constructed in 1927 remains a notable landmark at the site.
