All-Inclusive Private Guided 2-Day Tour of Trabzon
Two days through the ancient roads, mountain monasteries, and living traditions of the Turkish Black Sea coast.
This private guided 2-day tour of Trabzon takes you through one of Turkey's most historically layered and scenically dramatic cities, from a cliff-perched Byzantine monastery to a living hazelnut culture at the heart of local identity.
Trabzon has served for centuries as a crossroads between the Black Sea and the wider world, accumulating layers of Greek, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Turkish heritage that coexist in its streets, hilltop fortresses, and mountain valleys. The city rewards slow, attentive exploration — something a private guide makes genuinely possible.
Over two full days, this tour balances natural landscapes with urban heritage. The first day ventures into the mountain hinterland, where alpine lakes and vertical rock faces frame some of the region's most iconic sights. The second day brings you back into the city itself, where old walls, converted churches, and craft workshops tell the story of Trabzon's long and layered past.
All logistics are handled throughout, allowing you to focus entirely on what you are seeing and learning. Your guide provides historical and cultural context at every stop, turning sights into stories.
Tour Highlights
Stand before the Sumela Monastery, a 1,600-year-old Orthodox Christian complex carved into a cliff face 1,200 meters above sea level.
Visit Uzungol, a high-altitude lake known locally as the end of the Earth, surrounded by forested hills and mountain reflections.
Explore the Trabzon Hagia Sophia, a 13th-century structure that has served as a church, hospital, storehouse, mosque, museum, and mosque again.
Climb to Trabzon Castle, positioned on one of the city's highest points with panoramic views across the Black Sea coastline.
Walk through the Old City with your guide explaining the architectural and social history woven into its streets and structures.
Take part in hands-on cultural activities at the Hazelnut Center, including basket weaving, chocolate making, hazelnut harvesting, and local dance.
Catch a sunset over Uzungol at the end of Day 1, one of the most photographed moments in the entire Black Sea region.
Itinerary
Your first stop is the Sumela Monastery, founded in the 4th century and built directly into the rock face of the Pontic Mountains at 1,200 meters elevation. The interior frescoes date primarily from the 18th century and remain remarkably preserved. The monastery operated as a functioning religious site until 1923, when it was converted into a museum.
After the monastery, the route continues to Uzungol, a natural lake set in a broad alpine valley that locals refer to as the end of the Earth. The scenery here is defined by still water, forested ridgelines, and the kind of quiet that is increasingly rare. The area is considered the symbol of Trabzon and draws visitors from across Turkey and the wider region.
Day 2 opens with the Trabzon Hagia Sophia, built between 1238 and 1263 and notable for its complex history of religious and civic use. Christian art remains visible inside even during its current function as a mosque. From there, the tour moves to Trabzon Castle, a hilltop fortification that offers both historical context and commanding views over the city and sea.
Your guide leads you through the Old City, where Ottoman-era architecture and Byzantine remnants appear alongside everyday Trabzon life. The walk is structured around specific historical points but leaves space for organic discovery. Commentary covers urban development, trade history, and the city's role as a Black Sea port.
The tour concludes at the Hazelnut Center, where local instructors offer hands-on introductions to several traditional crafts and practices. Options include basket weaving, chocolate making, hazelnut harvesting, and folk dance participation. Admission to the center is included; individual activity costs are paid separately on site.
