Ancient Corinth, Temple of Hera and Blue Lake Private Tour from Athens
Cross the Corinth Canal and step into the layered history of one of antiquity's most commanding cities.
This private full-day journey takes you south of Athens and into the heart of the Peloponnese, where Ancient Corinth once stood as the wealthiest and most strategically positioned city in the ancient Greek world. From the narrow cut of the Corinth Canal to the sacred cove of the Heraion, each stop reveals a distinct chapter of Greece's remarkable past.
Corinth rose to prominence not simply through military power but through commerce. Positioned on the narrow isthmus connecting mainland Greece to the Peloponnese, it controlled trade routes between the Ionian and Aegean Seas, making it a hub where merchants, sailors, soldiers, and philosophers converged. At its peak in 400 BC, the city held a population of around 90,000 people.
The tour also draws a path toward the natural and sacred landscapes that surrounded this ancient urban center. Lake Vouliagmeni, known in antiquity as Eschatiotis or Gorgopis, sits tucked into the coastline near Perachora, offering a tranquil counterpoint to the busy ruins. Nearby, the Heraion of Perachora preserves the remains of a sanctuary dedicated to Hera, one of the oldest and most architecturally significant religious sites in the region.
This itinerary is structured for private travel, meaning the pace, focus, and commentary can adapt to your interests throughout the day. No large groups, no fixed crowd schedule.

Itinerary
Your journey south from Athens takes you to the Corinth Canal, which cuts 6.4 kilometres through the Isthmus of Corinth, separating the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland. From the bridge above, you have a direct view of the canal's sheer limestone walls and the vessels navigating through the 21.4-metre-wide channel below.
You enter one of the most layered archaeological sites in Greece, where the remains of a classical city-state overlap with Roman rebuilding from 44 BC. Key features include the Lechaion Road, the Fountain of Peirene, the Agora, the Odeon, the Basilica, and the Temple of Apollo constructed in 550 BC.
Built between 1931 and 1932, the on-site museum holds objects recovered from the surrounding excavations, offering context for what you have just walked through. The collection spans the prehistoric through Roman periods and is administered by the Greek Archaeological Service.
Located at the tip of the Perachora peninsula above a small cove in the Corinthian Gulf, this sanctuary to Hera includes the remnants of a temple of unusual antiquity, an L-shaped stoa, dining rooms, and a large cistern. The site is considered significant for understanding the origins of Greek temple architecture.
A short distance from the Heraion, Lake Vouliagmeni is a coastal lagoon connected to the Corinthian Gulf by a narrow channel no wider than six metres. With a sandy shoreline and a maximum depth of 40 metres, the lake offers a calm and scenic end to the archaeological portion of the day.
