This Algarve Cataplana Cooking Class is a private, hands-on culinary experience that takes you to the heart of southern Portuguese gastronomy, guided by a local chef in a serene rural kitchen overlooking the vineyard. Groups of up to twelve participants gather to prepare one of Portugal's most celebrated dishes from scratch, using fresh seasonal ingredients. No previous cooking experience is needed — only curiosity and an appetite for discovery.
The cataplana is more than a recipe: it is a copper pot, a cooking method, and a symbol of the Moorish heritage that continues to shape Algarve cuisine. In this class you will learn to use it as generations of Algarve cooks have done, working with fish, meat, seafood, or entirely plant-based ingredients depending on the option your group selects at the time of booking.
While the cataplana works its slow magic on the stove, the atmosphere shifts naturally toward storytelling. Regional products are shared, traditions are explained, and the connection between the landscape, its producers, and the food on the table becomes tangible.
The session ends around the table where your group enjoys the dish you prepared together, paired with carefully selected Algarve wine or a non-alcoholic alternative, in a relaxed and genuinely convivial setting.

How the Experience Unfolds
Make your way to the Algarve Gourmet property in Lagoa. Hosts wearing Algarve Gourmet signage will welcome you at the tasting room beside the main house.
Your local chef introduces the history of the cataplana — the dish and the iconic copper pot — and presents the key ingredients that define Algarve cuisine, from fresh fish to aromatic herbs and extra virgin olive oil.
Under step-by-step guidance, your group prepares the cataplana from scratch using the version selected at booking. Traditional techniques are demonstrated and practised throughout.
While the dish cooks slowly in the copper pot, the chef shares stories about Algarve gastronomy and the local territory. Tastings of regional and signature products are offered in a relaxed atmosphere.
The experience culminates with the group enjoying the cataplana together, paired with Algarve wine or a non-alcoholic alternative, in an informal and genuine setting.
Each participant receives the cataplana recipe to take home. For groups with optional transport, return transfer to accommodation follows at the close of the session.
