Northern Lights & South Iceland: Waterfalls, Glaciers & Aurora Hunting
Three days of volcanic landscapes, glacial lagoons, and nightly aurora chases along Iceland's legendary south coast.
This Northern Lights South Iceland private tour traces the full arc of Iceland's south coast, from the tectonic plains of Thingvellir to the floating icebergs of Jökulsárlón, while each night offers a dedicated hunt for the aurora borealis with a knowledgeable local guide.
Iceland's southern corridor is one of the most geologically dramatic stretches of land on earth. Waterfalls plunge from glacier tongues, black basalt beaches stretch toward the Atlantic, and volcanoes rest beneath ice caps that are visibly retreating year by year.
Traveling as a private group means the pace adapts to you. Stops at hidden canyon waterfalls, geothermal pools, and tomato-farm restaurants are built into the route, giving the journey texture beyond the standard highlights.
Folklore holds that the aurora appears when whales play games or when swans compete to fly furthest north, their wings flapping light into the sky. Whether the science or the legend speaks to you more, witnessing the lights above Iceland's open landscapes is a rare and lasting experience.
Tour Highlights
Walk behind Seljalandsfoss and discover the hidden canyon of Gljúfrabúi on Day 2's waterfall circuit.
Stand at the edge of Sólheimajökull glacier and witness the measurable retreat of Iceland's ice firsthand.

Three consecutive nights of guided Northern Lights hunting across Iceland's dark, open south coast skies.
Visit Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where two tectonic plates visibly diverge.
Relax in the Secret Lagoon, a natural geothermal pool set in raw Icelandic countryside.
Enter natural ice caves in winter or hike to Svartifoss and its famous hexagonal basalt columns in summer.
Itinerary Overview
Depart Reykjavík and travel the Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, the Strokkur geyser area, and Gullfoss waterfall. Stop at Friðheimar greenhouse restaurant and visit Icelandic horses before an afternoon soak at the Secret Lagoon. The evening is dedicated to hunting the Northern Lights before overnight near Hvolsvöllur.
Morning visits to Seljalandsfoss and the hidden Gljúfrabúi waterfall, followed by Skógafoss. Walk to the snout of Sólheimajökull glacier, then continue to Dyrhólaey promontory and Reynisfjara black beach. The day ends at Vík village with a second chance for the Northern Lights before overnight near Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
Visit Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and the Diamond Beach, then Fjallsárlón lagoon. Explore Fjarðárgljúfur canyon before the seasonal highlight: natural ice caves from November to April, or a glacier hike and Svartifoss waterfall hike from August to October. Return drive along the south coast to Reykjavík.
Each night your guide monitors aurora forecasts and cloud cover to find the best viewing position. The hunts are built into the accommodation stops rather than rushed side trips, allowing genuine time under the sky.
