Peneda-Gerês National Park 2-Day Private Tour
Mountains, waterfalls, medieval villages, and Roman roads — explored at your own pace in a private 4x4.
This Peneda-Gerês National Park private tour spans two full days across Portugal's only national park, covering more than 700 km² of granite peaks, ancient forests, cascading waterfalls, and historic villages that most visitors never reach in a single day.
The park's scale demands more than a quick pass-through. Over two days, you move from wolf-trap villages and Roman roads to medieval castles and pilgrimage sanctuaries, with river beaches and sweeping viewpoints in between.
Because this is a private tour, the itinerary bends to your interests. A guide with deep knowledge of the park adjusts each stop based on your pace, the season, and what matters most to you — whether that is history, wildlife, swimming, or simply standing at a viewpoint with no one else around.
Transport throughout is by comfortable 4x4 vehicle, allowing access to remote areas of the park that standard vehicles and large group tours cannot easily reach.
Tour Highlights
Stand above the iconic Tahiti Waterfall (Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas) and visit the easily accessible Arado Waterfall, both set among dramatic granite cliffs in the heart of the park.
Take in a panoramic sweep of the Cávado River valley and Caniçada Reservoir from the Pedra Bela viewpoint, perched on a granite platform at 829 metres.
Walk sections of the ancient Geira Romana, a Roman road that once connected Braga to Astorga, preserved inside the protected Mata da Albergaria forest.
Explore Lindoso Village and its 13th-century castle, overlooking the Lima River valley and one of Portugal's most remarkable clusters of traditional stone granaries.
Cross the Serra Amarela through remote mountain villages including Germil and the Vilarinho das Furnas Dam, with opportunities to spot garranos, deer, birds of prey, and eagles.
Visit the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta, one of Portugal's most significant pilgrimage sites, set among mountain scenery above the Cávado River.
Swim or relax at Alqueirão Beach, a river beach beside the Caniçada Dam, or let your guide direct you to a quieter, less-visited spot nearby.
Itinerary Overview
The tour begins in Fafião, one of fifteen villages in the parish of Cabril, known locally as the Village of the Wolves. Here you visit the Fojo dos Lobos, an ancient stone wolf trap, before continuing to the Tahiti Waterfall (viewable from above) and the Arado Waterfall, accessible by a short easy trail from the parking area.
At the Pedra Bela viewpoint (829 m), a granite platform delivers a sweeping view over the Gerês mountains, forests, and the Caniçada Reservoir below. After lunch, you visit Alqueirão Beach for swimming in summer or explore alternative viewpoints and reservoir landscapes in cooler seasons.
The day ends in Vilar da Veiga, a village in the park known for its thermal springs, restaurants, and local craft shops. This is your base for the night, with time to try traditional Minho cuisine and browse regional products.
Day two opens in the protected Mata da Albergaria forest, where you walk among oak trees and discover milestones from the Geira Romana Roman road. From there you continue to Lindoso Village and the Castle of Lindoso, a 13th-century fortress with views across the Lima River valley and the village's famous stone granaries.
The route climbs through the Serra Amarela (Yellow Mountains), passing through Germil and the Vilarinho das Furnas Dam before reaching Campo do Gerês, a landscape of rugged peaks and forested valleys. Wildlife sightings — garranos, deer, semi-wild cattle, eagles, and birds of prey — are possible throughout this stretch, depending on where the animals are at the time.
The tour concludes at the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta, one of Portugal's most important pilgrimage sites. The sanctuary's name — meaning Open Door — reflects centuries of welcoming travelers, and the site offers panoramic mountain views alongside traditional local products.
