The Old Path's Hike: Caminho Real from Caniçal to Machico
Where ancient trails and whispering levadas lead you through the living history of Madeira.
This challenging half-day journey follows the Caminho Real between Caniçal and Machico, one of Madeira's oldest royal paths, before descending into the tranquil corridor of Levada dos Maroços. The route connects two of the island's most historically significant settlements through terrain that rewards every step with sweeping coastal views and dense native woodland.
The Caminho Real network was built centuries ago to link communities across Madeira's rugged landscape, and this section preserves much of its original cobblestone character. Walking it today means following the same route that fishermen, traders, and villagers used long before roads made such journeys routine.
The second half of the hike transitions to the Levada dos Maroços, an irrigation channel that cuts through the valley with quiet precision. The contrast between the exposed ridge of the Caminho Real and the sheltered calm of the levada makes this route one of the most varied and satisfying hikes in the eastern part of the island.

Itinerary
Participants are collected from their accommodation in Funchal or designated pickup points and transferred east toward Caniçal. The drive offers early views of Madeira's dramatic eastern coastline.
The group arrives at the Whale Museum in Caniçal, the starting point of the hike. This coastal village was once the heart of Madeira's whaling industry, and the museum provides a striking cultural backdrop to begin the journey.
The hike begins along the Caminho Real, ascending via centuries-old cobblestone paths that link Caniçal to Machico. The trail offers commanding views of the coast and surrounding valleys before descending toward the Machico basin.
A pause for refreshments approximately mid-route gives walkers a chance to rest legs and refuel. The stop also provides an opportunity to appreciate the scenery at a slower pace.
The route transitions to the Levada dos Maroços, a quieter and more sheltered section of trail that winds through the valley. The change in landscape and pace provides a welcome contrast to the exposed ridge of the Caminho Real.
The hike concludes around mid-afternoon, after which participants are transferred back to the original pickup points in Funchal.
