St Catherine's Monastery and the Summit of Mount Sinai from Sharm
Ascend one of Egypt's most revered peaks and discover a living monument of faith and history at its base.
This full-day expedition offers a rare opportunity to experience the Mount Sinai sunrise hike in its full spiritual and scenic grandeur, departing directly from Sharm el Sheikh for a journey that combines high-altitude trekking with a visit to one of the world's oldest functioning monasteries.
Rising to an altitude of 7,497 feet (2,285 meters), Mount Sinai stands as one of the most significant peaks in Egypt, drawing pilgrims and adventurers alike. The pre-dawn ascent through the quiet desert landscape creates a sense of solitude and anticipation that few travel experiences can match.
At the summit, the illuminated chapel and mosque serve as silent guides in the darkness before sunrise paints the surrounding valleys in warm hues. The descent then leads to the Monastery of St. Catherine, where centuries of history are preserved in stone, manuscript, and icon.
Founded in the 6th century at the site where tradition holds that Moses encountered the Burning Bush, St. Catherine's Monastery remains an active religious community and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its library and collection of religious art rank among the most significant in the Christian world.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you from your hotel in Sharm el Sheikh in the late evening. The drive to the base of Mount Sinai takes approximately three hours through the Sinai Peninsula.
The hike begins in darkness along the established trail, with the path ahead lit by torchlight and a sky full of stars. The climb takes roughly two to three hours at a steady, manageable pace.
At the peak, the illuminated chapel and mosque mark the highest point as the horizon begins to glow. The panoramic view of the surrounding Sinai mountains at sunrise is the defining moment of the experience.
After the sunrise, the group descends via the Steps of Repentance or the main camel trail toward the valley below. The descent leads directly to the entrance of St. Catherine's Monastery.
A guided tour of the monastery grounds introduces visitors to the ancient chapel, the site of the Burning Bush, and the remarkable collection of art and manuscripts housed within the walls. The monastery opens for visits during limited morning hours.
Following the monastery visit, the group boards the vehicle for the return journey to Sharm el Sheikh. Arrival back at hotels is expected in the early afternoon.
