Mount Etna and Taormina from Messina Port
From Europe's most active volcano to Sicily's most celebrated hilltop town, all in one day.
This full-day excursion invites cruise passengers to discover two of Sicily's most iconic destinations: Mount Etna from Messina Port, the towering volcano that defines the island's eastern landscape, and Taormina, the ancient resort town perched above the Ionian Sea.
Departing directly from Messina Port, guests travel south toward Etna Natural Park, arriving at Rifugio Sapienza on the volcano's southern slope at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level. The landscape here is dramatic — hardened lava fields, volcanic craters, and sweeping panoramas that shift with the mountain's constant geological activity.
After the Etna visit, the itinerary continues to Taormina, a pedestrian town built into the cliffs above the sea. The Greek-Roman Theatre, one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world, sits at the heart of the town with views across the coastline and toward Etna itself. Free time allows for independent exploration at your own pace.
The tour is conducted by an English-speaking driver and covers considerable distances and terrain on foot. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is strongly recommended given the uneven volcanic surfaces encountered at Etna.
