Mount Etna and Taormina from Catania Port
From Europe's highest active volcano to Sicily's most celebrated hilltop town — all in one extraordinary day.
This full-day excursion combines two of Sicily's most iconic destinations: a morning on the slopes of Mount Etna, the tallest and most active volcano in Europe, followed by an afternoon of free exploration in the timeless resort town of Taormina.
Departing from Catania Port, the journey takes you through the dramatic landscapes of the Etna Natural Park on the volcano's southern flank, reaching the Rifugio Sapienza base at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level. The terrain here shifts between ancient lava fields, volcanic craters, and fragrant Mediterranean scrubland.
In the afternoon, the itinerary descends to Taormina — a clifftop town that has drawn travelers for centuries. Its pedestrian historic center offers commanding views of the Ionian Sea and the Sicilian coastline, with the celebrated Greek-Roman Theatre standing as its most visited landmark.
This excursion is designed for cruise passengers seeking an efficient and immersive introduction to two of Sicily's defining landscapes, with a comfortable return to the port before sailing.

Itinerary
Your driver meets you directly at the port and the group departs toward the southern slopes of Mount Etna. The drive through the lava-stone villages and vineyards of the Etna foothills takes approximately one hour.
The group arrives at the Etna Natural Park's main southern access point. From here, you have approximately two hours of free time to explore the Silvestri Craters independently. Admission to the crater area is not included in the tour price.
For those wishing to reach higher elevations, an independent ascent by cable car and then 4x4 vehicle is available on the spot, subject to weather and current volcanic activity conditions. These fees are paid directly at the site and are not included in the base price.
After the Etna visit, the group travels approximately one hour southwest to Taormina, the celebrated clifftop resort perched above the Ionian Sea. The town is fully pedestrian and best explored on foot.
Up to two hours of leisure time in Taormina allows for an independent visit to the Greek-Roman Theatre, a stroll along Corso Umberto, or simply enjoying the panoramic sea views. Theatre admission is not included.
The group drives back to Catania in approximately 45 minutes. Drop-off is at the cruise port, timed to ensure a comfortable return before sailing.
