Etna Sunset Tour: Lava Caves, Craters and a Sicilian Sunset
Walk beneath the volcano, cross lunar landscapes, and watch the Ionian coast blush gold at dusk.
The Etna Sunset Tour takes you deep into the volcanic world of Europe's tallest active volcano, combining a walk through a lava tube cave, a hike to 2,000 metres above sea level, and one of the most dramatic sunset views in the Mediterranean. This five-hour guided experience is rated easy and suited to most fitness levels.
The tour begins among ancient lava flows draped with yellow-flowered gorse and scattered green vegetation, a landscape that shifts constantly as altitude increases. Guests are picked up directly from their accommodation, and the shared transfer is part of the social experience the guide encourages throughout the journey.
Higher on the mountain, the terrain gives way to lava bombs, silent craters, and wide open panoramas stretching from the Gulf of Catania northward to Calabria across the Ionian Sea. As the light fades, the volcanic rock takes on colours that no photograph fully captures. The evening closes with a tasting of local Etna products in Zafferana Etnea.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you from your accommodation and drives up the southern slopes of Mount Etna. The route passes through citrus groves and pine forests before the landscape opens onto hardened lava fields.
The tour begins underground inside a lava tube, a natural tunnel carved by flowing magma during past eruptions. Helmets and flashlights are provided, and the guide explains how these formations develop and what they reveal about the volcano's activity.
Above ground, the path leads to the Silvestri Craters on the southeastern slope. Visitors can walk around and inside the cones and take in views of Etna's higher active craters from this vantage point.
The group continues upward through a terrain of lava bombs and ancient craters that resembles the surface of the moon. The Ionian coastline stretches below as the sun begins its descent.
At peak elevation, the group pauses to watch the sunset paint the volcanic rock and the sea below. The combination of altitude, silence, and light makes this the defining moment of the tour.
The tour ends with a stop at Oro Etna, where guests sample wine, olive oil, and honey produced on the fertile eastern slopes of the volcano before returning to their accommodation.
