Luxor to Aswan and Abu Simbel: Temples, Dams, and Ancient Wonders
Two action-packed days tracing the most iconic monuments of ancient Egypt along the Nile.
This Luxor to Abu Simbel overnight tour covers the greatest concentration of ancient Egyptian monuments in southern Egypt, from the Ptolemaic temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo to the colossal rock-cut statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel. An expert Egyptologist guide accompanies you throughout, providing historical context that transforms each site from stone into story. Door-to-door transfers from Luxor, Aswan, and Hurghada are included.
The first day moves through a sequence of exceptionally preserved temples along the Nile. The Temple of Horus at Edfu, constructed between 237 and 57 BC, retains its roof and much of its original decoration, making it one of the most complete ancient structures in Egypt. At Kom Ombo, a rare double temple dedicated jointly to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus the Elder rises directly above the riverbank.
The afternoon brings the island sanctuary of Philae, relocated to its current site after the construction of the Aswan High Dam to prevent it from being submerged. The dam itself, completed in 1970 after eleven years of construction, is also on the itinerary, offering a different kind of monument — one that reshaped the hydrology and agriculture of an entire region.
Day two begins before dawn for the drive to Abu Simbel, where four colossal statues of Ramses II guard the entrance to a temple carved directly into a sandstone cliff around 1264 BC. The site was famously rescued and relocated in the 1960s as part of an international engineering effort to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. The smaller Temple of Hathor, dedicated to Ramses' queen Nefertari, stands nearby.

Itinerary
Your guide meets you at your hotel in Luxor for an early departure south along the Nile. The first stop is the Temple of Horus at Edfu, constructed between 237 and 57 BC and preserved largely intact by centuries of desert sand. Its roof remains in place, creating one of the most atmospheric interiors of any ancient Egyptian monument.
Continue to the Ptolemaic temple of Kom Ombo, built primarily between 180 and 47 BCE on the site of an earlier structure. The temple's unusual design features twin sanctuaries, courts, and hypostyle halls, one side dedicated to Sobek and the other to Horus the Elder. Ancient crocodile mummies are displayed in an adjacent museum on site.
Arrive in Aswan for a boat crossing to the island of Philae, home to a temple complex dedicated primarily to the goddess Isis and dating to the Ptolemaic period. The temples were carefully dismantled and reassembled on a higher island during the 1960s to prevent them from being submerged. The tour then passes the Aswan High Dam before you check into your hotel for the night.
After an early breakfast at the hotel, depart for Abu Simbel, approximately three hours south of Aswan near the Sudanese border. The site comprises two rock-cut temples commissioned by Ramses II around 1264 BC and relocated in the 1960s as part of a UNESCO-led international campaign. The four colossal seated statues at the facade of the main temple each stand roughly 20 meters tall.
After exploring Abu Simbel with your guide, return by road to Aswan or Luxor, depending on your booked transfer option. Hurghada pickups and drop-offs are also available for this tour. The tour concludes upon arrival at your hotel.
