3-Day Lisbon to Porto and Douro Valley Private Tour
From the walled city of Obidos to the vineyard terraces of the Douro, three days through the soul of Portugal.
The Lisbon to Porto and Douro Valley private tour connects Portugal's most storied destinations in a single coherent journey, moving through medieval towns, Atlantic coastlines, sacred shrines, and UNESCO-listed wine country over three carefully structured days.
A dedicated private guide accompanies the group throughout, adapting the pace and emphasis of each stop to the interests of the travellers on board. Larger groups of more than fourteen participants can be accommodated through coordinated vehicles and additional guides, so the standard of attention does not diminish with scale.
The route is classified as easy in terms of physical difficulty, making it suitable for a broad range of travellers including those who prefer measured walking distances and comfortable transfers between sites. Each day builds naturally on the last, beginning in Lisbon and ending with a return to the capital via Fatima.
Tour Highlights
Walk the intact medieval walls and streets of Obidos, a hilltop town that has preserved nearly a thousand years of layered history in a single living space.
Stand above Nazare and observe the Atlantic swells that have made this coastline internationally recognised, then discover the town's deep pilgrimage heritage that predates its surf reputation.
Take in the most celebrated panorama of Porto from Serra do Pilar in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the full sweep of the riverside city unfolds across the Douro.
Travel Route 222 between Regua and Pinhao, a road flanked by UNESCO-designated vineyard terraces widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in Europe.
Stop for lunch and wine tasting in the heart of the Douro Valley, where the river bends through stepped quintas producing some of Portugal's most celebrated wines.
Explore Porto on foot through two distinct walking circuits, taking in the Cathedral, Sao Bento station, Clerigos tower, Lello bookstore, and the Carmo church.
Visit the Shrine of Fatima on the return to Lisbon, one of the most significant Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world and a place of quiet reflection regardless of background.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Departing Lisbon, the first stop is the walled town of Obidos, perched on a hillside in western Portugal. The medieval streets hold Gothic and Baroque architecture side by side, and the Gothic monastery within the walls contains the tombs at the centre of Portugal's most enduring royal love story.
The route continues to Nazare on the Atlantic coast, where the clifftop viewpoint reveals the ocean conditions that attract surfers from around the world. The town's identity as a major pilgrimage destination long before the surf era is explored before the group continues north to Porto, arriving in time for a first view of the city from Serra do Pilar before hotel drop-off.
Leaving Porto by highway, the tour exits at Amarante and transitions to the national road that descends through terraced hillsides into the Douro Valley. The drive from Amarante to Regua runs parallel to the river for a significant stretch, offering sustained views of the valley landscape.
Lunch and wine tasting are arranged at a riverside location in the lower Douro near Regua. The afternoon follows Route 222 east to Pinhao through the heart of the UNESCO-listed vineyard zone before the group returns to Porto in the early evening.
The final day opens with a walking tour of Porto beginning at the Cathedral, continuing to Sao Bento railway station with its celebrated azulejo panels, then descending to the Ribeira waterfront along the historic connecting street between upper and lower Porto.
A second walking circuit in the upper city covers Clerigos tower, the Carmo church, and the Lello bookstore, which draws visitors for both its architecture and its literary associations. The group then drives south, stopping at the Shrine of Fatima before completing the return journey to Lisbon.
