Multi Hull Course: 4-Day Catamaran Sailing Programme
From first principles to confident catamaran handling in four progressive days on the water.
This multihull sailing course is designed to give participants a thorough, practical understanding of catamaran behaviour, seamanship, and safe offshore operations. Delivered across four structured days, it bridges theory and hands-on experience in a logical, accessible progression. The difficulty level is rated Easy, making it suitable for sailors who are newer to multihull platforms.
Catamarans handle differently from monohulls in nearly every respect, from their wider beam and dual-engine manoeuvring to their response in wind and waves. This course addresses those differences directly, ensuring that participants understand not just what to do but why each technique matters. The goal is genuine competence, not just a certificate.
Each day builds on the last, covering boat familiarisation, departure and arrival procedures, passage planning, and emergency protocols. Instructors guide students through real scenarios rather than simulated exercises wherever conditions allow. By the final day, participants are expected to handle routine catamaran operations with confidence and sound judgement.
Course Highlights
Gain a solid grounding in catamaran-specific sailing techniques and boat behaviour across four structured days.
Safety procedures and best practices are integrated throughout, preparing sailors for real-world conditions.
Understand how multihull design affects performance, handling, and response to changing wind and sea states.
Theory sessions complement on-water practice, reinforcing understanding of navigation and passage planning.
Manoeuvring drills cover docking, anchoring, and crew coordination in a variety of practical situations.
Course difficulty is rated Easy, making it accessible to sailors transitioning from monohulls or beginners with basic sea experience.
Course Itinerary
Participants are introduced to the catamaran's layout, systems, and equipment. The day covers safety briefings, engine checks, and initial handling exercises in calm conditions to establish comfort and familiarity with the vessel.
Focus shifts to understanding how a catamaran performs under sail. Students practise sail trim, tacking, gybing, and reading the boat's response to wind across different points of sail.
Practical sessions concentrate on port entry, marina manoeuvring, anchoring procedures, and using twin engines effectively. Crew coordination and communication are emphasised throughout this day's exercises.
The final day brings together all skills through a short coastal passage and safety scenario exercises. An informal assessment reviews each participant's progress and readiness for independent catamaran operations.
