Landmannalaugar Hiking and Natural Hot Springs Tour from Reykjavík
Colorful rhyolite peaks, ancient lava fields, and a restorative soak in geothermal waters — all in one extraordinary day.
This guided day tour to Landmannalaugar takes you deep into Iceland's Central Highlands, where volcanic geology, steaming hot springs, and vivid mountain landscapes combine into one of the country's most compelling natural experiences. Departing from Reykjavík with an optional pickup in Hella, the journey itself becomes part of the adventure as the terrain shifts dramatically from coastal lowlands to raw highland wilderness.
Landmannalaugar sits at the confluence of a cooled lava field and a series of brightly colored rhyolite mountains, creating a visual contrast found almost nowhere else on Earth. The area is geologically active, and your guide will help you understand the forces that shaped this surreal terrain over thousands of years.
After a multi-hour guided hike through lava formations, obsidian deposits, and steaming fumaroles, free time at the base camp gives you the opportunity to relax in the natural hot springs that make this destination famous. The warm, mineral-rich water provides a rewarding contrast to the rugged trail conditions.
The return journey follows the same highland route back toward the coast, with a brief stop in Hella before the final leg into Reykjavík. By the time you arrive back in the city, you will have covered significant highland terrain while experiencing Iceland's volcanic interior at close range.

Tour Itinerary
The tour begins with passenger collection at several designated bus stops across Reykjavík, including City Hall, Hallgrímskirkja, Höfðatorg, Skúlagata, and the Reykjavík Eco Campsite. Travelers should be waiting at their chosen stop in advance of the scheduled pickup window. The bus departs the city at the official departure time.
The tour makes a scheduled stop at the Olís Petrol Station in Hella, located in South Iceland. This stop serves both as a pickup point for travelers joining from the area and as a convenience break for restrooms and any last-minute food or drink purchases. The bus continues toward the highlands shortly after.
After traveling through the Icelandic interior on highland roads, the group arrives at the Landmannalaugar base camp. The landscape shift from lowland to highland is dramatic, and the base camp area already offers views of the surrounding rhyolite mountains and lava field.
The guided hike covers a round-trip route of approximately five hours, passing through colorful mountain terrain, lava fields, obsidian deposits, and geothermally active zones. The guide leads the group at a measured pace suitable for participants with a reasonable level of fitness, pointing out geological and ecological features throughout. Trails include uneven surfaces and possible stream crossings, so appropriate footwear and layered clothing are essential.
Following the hike, guests have free time at the base camp to explore independently or relax in the natural hot springs. The geothermally heated pool is a defining feature of Landmannalaugar and a popular way to unwind after the trail. A swimsuit and towel are required for bathing and are not provided.
The bus departs Landmannalaugar in the afternoon for the return drive through the highlands. A stop in Hella allows some guests to disembark, while the remainder continue to Reykjavík. The estimated arrival back in the capital is around 8:00 PM, with drop-offs at the same designated stops used for morning pickup.
