Lake Mývatn and Northern Lights Winter Combo
Three days of volcanic wonders and aurora skies in the heart of the Icelandic north
This Lake Mývatn Northern Lights winter tour combines a full day of exploration around one of Iceland's most geologically remarkable regions with dedicated evening hunts for the aurora borealis, all based out of Akureyri in North Iceland.
The Lake Mývatn area sits atop an active volcanic zone and showcases a concentration of natural features rarely found in one place — from pseudocraters and lava pillars to bubbling hot springs and steam vents. The landscape was largely shaped by a basaltic eruption roughly 2,300 years ago, and its effects remain dramatically visible across the terrain.
Each evening, the group departs Akureyri to escape city light pollution and search for the Northern Lights under open northern skies. The destination shifts nightly based on cloud cover forecasts and atmospheric conditions, giving every outing the best realistic chance of a clear sighting.
A complimentary airport shuttle is included for guests arriving on EasyJet flights into Akureyri, making the transition from airport to accommodation straightforward from the moment you land.
Tour Highlights
Explore the volcanic landscapes surrounding Lake Mývatn, created by a massive basaltic lava flow over two millennia ago.
Visit Hverarönd hot spring area at Námaskarð, where boiling mud pools and fumaroles create an otherworldly setting.
Join guided Northern Lights hunts outside Akureyri with an operator who repositions nightly for the clearest skies available.
Optional relaxation at the Mývatn Nature Baths, where geothermal water offers a restorative soak in a striking natural setting.
Stop at Goðafoss waterfall, one of Iceland's most celebrated cascades, on the drive east along Eyjafjordur fjord.
Walk through Dimmuborgir, an expanse of unusually shaped lava formations that rank among North Iceland's most visited natural sites.
Photograph Eyjafjordur fjord from a scenic overlook on the return journey, with Akureyri spread across the valley below.
Itinerary Overview
Guests arriving on qualifying EasyJet flights are collected at Akureyri Airport via complimentary shuttle. Weather permitting, an aurora hunt departs on the evening of arrival, heading out of the city to find clear skies.
The group travels east along Eyjafjordur fjord, stopping first at Goðafoss waterfall before continuing to Lake Mývatn. The day covers Grjótagjá cave, Námaskarð hot springs, Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters, and the lava formations of Dimmuborgir, with an optional visit to the Mývatn Nature Baths.
The tour concludes with a transfer back to Akureyri Airport. Guests are dropped at the terminal following the final included activity, closing out the three-day program.
If the aurora tour operates on any evening but no lights are observed, the operator offers a complimentary repeat outing. The tour is assessed each day around 6 PM based on prevailing sky and weather conditions.
