Berufjordur Experience: Kayaking on the East Fjords of Iceland
Paddle into one of Iceland's most wildlife-rich fjords and discover its secrets from the water.
Kayaking in Berufjordur offers a rare chance to explore a 20-kilometre fjord teeming with seals, puffins, jellyfish, and on fortunate occasions, humpback whales and orcas gliding alongside your kayak. This guided experience is rated easy, making it accessible to first-time paddlers and families alike. The calm, sheltered waters of the East Fjords provide one of Iceland's most rewarding on-water adventures.
Djupivogur is one of Iceland's oldest fishing villages, and its surrounding fjord has long been a gathering place for marine wildlife drawn by the rich coastal ecosystem. The meeting point beside the landmark public artwork Eggin i Gledivik sets the tone for an experience rooted in both natural wonder and local culture.
Your guide will share the history and ecological significance of the area while you paddle at a gentle pace through the clear fjord waters. The route covers approximately 3 kilometres, giving ample time to observe wildlife, photograph the dramatic mountain backdrop, and simply absorb the stillness of the East Fjords.
Harbor porpoises are frequent visitors, and humpback whales as well as orcas have been spotted in Berufjordur almost every year. Even without a whale sighting, the dense bird life and regular appearances of harbour seals make every outing memorable.
